"lance!" a heavy voice called out from behind him. lance turned his head to see his lifelong friend, hunk garret, running down the new york city sidewalks after him.
lance beamed at the sight of his friend. "hunk!" he bellowed, sticking out his arms for a hug. hunk stopped just in front of him, catching his breath with his hands on his knees.
"lance," he breathed, standing up. "why do you walk so fast?" he asked as he continued to catch his breath.
lance laughed softly. "you gotta keep up in this city, hunk. what're you doing here?" lance asked kindly. "you have class today."
hunk met lance's eyes, smiling widely. "not today!" he said, lifting up his hand. "look!" he said excitedly, showing lance his palm.
there was a large yellow sunflower blooming from his hand, the large leaves sprouting from his wrist.
"it's happening today, lance, look how big it is! it hasn't disappeared or anything, i'm gonna meet them today!" hunk rambled, adrenaline in his eyes.
lance smiled and put a hand on hunk's shoulder. "garret, i know you could do it. now go find them!" lance exclaimed, throwing his hands in the air and riling hunk up even more. "go, run to them!" he said loudly.
"i know you're being sarcastic but thanks!" hunk said as he turned to run in the opposite direction. "i'll text you!" he said as he got farther away.
the wide smile on lance's face stayed until hunk was out of sight, the smile dropping back down to the neutrally pained expression he had been wearing before hunk told him his wonderful news.
he had a sunflower, the blessed flower that appears on one's most prominent feature when they're going to meet their soulmate soon. exactly when depends solely on how large the yellow flower gets. hunk's was huge, which meant he was most likely going to meet his alma gemela today.
lance had gotten a sunflower once. it was his first time in the city, when he was moving into his dorm. he had walked into the dorm, his entire life in the boxes he was carrying, when a small sunflower bloomed on his collarbone. he didn't notice it until hunk had pointed it out.
"lance!" he had exclaimed, pointing to the small yellow flower on his friend's collarbone. lance had dropped his boxes, excitement on his face as he slowly stroked the flower that rested just above the red carnation on his chest.
he smiled as the sunflower grew slightly larger each hour, but when he was finally moved into his dorm and sat down, the sunflower slowly shrunk until there was only just a small pink scar where it had been. lance had groaned, falling back onto the bed with disappointment ringing in the air.
even though lance hated his dorm, even his college, he never moved anywhere in fear it would be too far away from his soulmate. he almost never left his block, staying put in his dorm hoping that someday that sunflower would come back.
it never did.
