To Boldly Go

First Day

As Ensign Dumas finished materializing he was greeted by none other than Captain Pettinger himself. As soon as he saw him Dumas snapped a smart salute and barked, "Permission to come aboard Sir!" The Captain chuckled and motioned for Dumas to follow him. "So Ensign Dumas I hear nothing but good news about you from the academy, " he said with a wry grin, "Top of your class in command track excellent marksmanship skills and a proven ability to make tough decisions on the fly," he finished with a tone of finality. Dumas was suprised that the Captain had kept such a keen eye in him while he was in the academy. "Sir, permission to speak freely?" He asked. "Granted." Dumas took a deep breath before continuing. "Sir why were you so interested in me while i was at the acadamy?" He finally asked as the made it to the turbolift. "Because I served with your father Ithillion," he said using my first name instead of my last. "He was a great officer, a great captain and most importantly a great man. I know he died when you were very young, and, i know you followed him into service." He paused with what looked like a tear in his eye. Before he continued they got into the elevator and started heading to the bridge. "I owe your father my life, and, to repay that debt i followed your academic career hoping you'd be as outstanding as your father. So far you have been and so I brought you aboard to mentor you and hopefully see you become a Captain of a starship yourself." He finished as the turbolift reached the bridge, as the doors opened the Captain gestured to the bridge and said, "after you ensign."

As I entered the Bridge all eyes were on me trying to figure me out for a split second until the commander stood up and said, " CAPTAIN ON DECK" which caused all the other officers to stand up. As the Captain walked forward eyeing he nodded at me and i headed to his office. As the doors hissed closed i heard him put them at ease. After the doors closed i was standing in the office and looking at how it was set up. A couple pictures of his wife and kids here and there along with massive pictures of all the Ships from history that had carried the name USS EXPLORER. As Dumas was admiring the photos Captain Pettinger walked into his office with a sigh and put a PADD down on to his desk making a light tap sound. Dumas whipped around standing at attention as the Captain seated himself behind his desk and then motioned for Dumas to sit as well. The Captain picked up the PADD and began reading out loud, "Ensign you will be on deck 13 quarters 183B, you will be in charge of security team  3 under the command of my security chief Lieutenant Commander Stephens. You will report for duty at 0800 tomorrow for your first shift." He finished reading then looked at me chuckled to himself and said, "you're dismissed ensign and i hope you're as good at darts as your old man was..." and with that I took my leave and headed to my quarters on deck 13 room 183B.

As I entered my quarters the first thing I noticed was another junior officer in the room already, Ensign Smith J Donovan. He smiled at me as I sat my stuff down and looked at the sparsely decorated room. "Kinda bland, but, it's home for the 4 years buddy," he said to me while I was still looking around. I looked him up and down, lean, dark hair with brown eyes and crinkles around his eyes as if he smiled a lot. "I don't mind sparse" I replied while I started unpacking my gear. He just chuckled and picked up a book I hadn't noticed on the side table. After i finished packing my gear I headed to the mess deck to mingle with and hopefully meet someone on the crew that I knew.
