T E X T M E
Back in 2013, the U.N. presented a rather mind-boggling statistic: out of the world's population of 7 billion people, about 6 billion of them had access to mobile phones. To put it another way: more people had access to a cell phone than access to a functioning toilet.
There's no denying the staggering impact that mobile phones have had on the world. Since its inception in 1973, the cell phone has rapidly become an almost necessary part of daily life for many people.
So, when authors are creating stories that are set in the modern era, it's natural to reference cell phone usage. Text messages, in particular, seem to dominate contemporary communications. Perhaps you've described one of your characters receiving or sending a text message at one point.
How can this be better represented in one's story? Well, Wattpad authors have a distinct advantage in this regard. The ability to include photos in one's Wattpad book equates to the opening of a door to nearly endless possibilities for creativity!
If you've written a modern-day story, and would like to make its modern-day communication methods really come alive, consider creating mocked-up text message screenshots to bring a sense of realism to conversations between your characters.
Although there are several ways of creating a "fake" text message conversation, I've found one really simple way to accomplish this: a text generator site! In fact, there are several websites that exist to perform this very function, but today we'll be focusing on the steps to using just one of them (via PC). The resulting image appears almost identical to (what would be) a text screenshot from an Apple device.
1. Visit www.ios7text.com
2. On the left panel, click Settings. Here, you can customize the name of the text sender, the mobile service provider, the time on the phone's clock and more.
3. Beneath Settings, on the left panel of the website, you should see expandable options for customizing Battery life (choose the percentage shown, or no percentage at all) as well as Connection options (3G/4G/Wifi). You can even indicate the strength of the connection signal.
4. Click on Messages. This is where the magic happens! Here, you can add the actual material of the text messages. You can decide whether the texts are set to a blue, gray or green background. You can also add photos.
5. The site requests a "like" on their Facebook page in exchange for the ability to save the final product. If you do not use Facebook, it's easy to screenshot your work from your computer. Simply bypass the button to generate an image, and instead do the following, if you're using Windows 10:
- Press the Function button (fn) and the Print Screen button (prt sc)
- Open the free program Paint (comes pre-installed on most PCs)
- Press the Control (ctrl) button and the "V" key at the same time, to paste the image into Paint
- Crop the image as desired
- Save the image
All that's left now is to add the screenshot image to your story, in the appropriate location!
Happy visual storytelling!
