Family

By Katie Wright

Brantley and I have been married for three years. In that time I became a nurse and have been working as a neonatal nurse at the children’s hospital. I work in the neonatal intensive care unit. I love working there and helping the sick babies, but sometimes it can be really depressing and draining. Brantley works in construction and also teaches rodeo, I help out when I can, but I mainly teach kids how to ride horses, another source of our income is boarding horses. We may be a young couple, but we are financially stable. We aren’t immature like most twenty one and twenty two year olds, so that helps with us being stable.

We had been thinking about starting a family, but we are in no hurry. We had the motto if it happens it happens, if it doesn’t right now its not meant to be yet. We are still young so our animals are our kids for now.

I was working a night shift, which I never do, when I started feeling sick. I ran into the employee bathroom, from the nurse’s desk, just in time to empty my stomach in the toilet. When I tried to get up I had a pain shoot through my head. I ignored the pain and washed my hands and rinsed my mouth out. I went to my bag to find some gum. At least my shift was almost over.

At the end of my shift I was still feeling nauseas. I decided while I was still at the hospital, I would go to my doctor. I clocked out and went up one flight of stairs before I reached my doctors office. I walked in and went straight back to a room.

“So, Brooklyn what seems to be the problem?” Doctor Lisa questioned me.

“I have been throwing up for a couple of weeks and during my shift I got sick again, and got a major headache, and I have been nauseas since.” I answered her question.

“Okay, I want to run some tests.”

          “Okay.’

“Let me get everything to take some blood.”

“Okay.” Dr. Lisa walked out of my room, so I took the chance to text Brantley to tell him I will be late getting home. Since it was Saturday he had the day off.

After I went to the pharmacy, I drove home. I was beyond exhausted; I was ready to go to bed. When I walked through the door the smell of breakfast hit me. How sweet of Brantley to cook me breakfast. When I got to the kitchen he was just finishing the bacon. I walked over behind him and hugged him.

          “Smells good babe.” I said.

“Thanks honey.” He said back to me, turning around.

While he finished cooking I started to set the table. When the bacon was done we both sat down at the table.

“So why were you late getting home this morning?” he questioned.

“I had to go to the doctor.” I said trying to hide my smile.

          “What’s wrong?”

“Nothing, I have just felt weird.”

          “That’s not nothing.”

          “It’s going to become normal.”

“Why is that?” Okay so he wasn’t getting the hint.

          “I’m pregnant.”

          “You’re what.”

“I’m pregnant.” Brantley jumped up and picked me up spinning me around. When he sat me down he placed his hands over my stomach protectively.

“How far along are you?” he asked.

“The doctor thinks about eight weeks, but she want know for sure until we go for an ultrasound next Saturday.”

          “That’s amazing.”

“I know. I wanted to make sure you could come to the first ultrasound.”

“Nothing would have stopped me from coming to the ultrasound.”

          “I know.”

          “Does anyone know?”

“No just us and my doctor.”

“Let’s go out to celebrate tonight.”

I was getting ready for our celebratory dinner tonight after an amazing day of sleep. I had picked out a baby blue maxi dress to wear. I had just finished the final touches on everything, when Brantley came in looking just as handsome as the day we got married.

          “You ready?” he asked.

“Yeah.” We walked to the garage and got into his new Chevrolet Silverado, the other one is now just a work truck. This one is black and had a very small lift and it gets better gas mileage then ole red.

Brantley opened my door and helped me into the truck before walking over to his to get in. He opened the garage door and we were on our way to the steak house.

We were sitting in the doctor’s office to hopefully find out the gender. It seems like just yesterday that we were here for the first ultrasound. Every time I hear my unborn child’s heart beat I get chill bumps.

“Brooklyn Jordan.” A nurse called. We got up and walked back to a room. After the nurse left I looked at Brantley.

“Do you want a boy or a girl?” I asked.

“I really don’t care. I will love them either way.” He answered. I was interrupted by the ultrasound technician and the doctor coming in.

“Hello Brooklyn, Brantley. Let’s see how this little one is doing.” Dr. Lisa said. I lifted up my shirt exposing my twenty-one week baby bump. The ultrasound tech put the cold gel onto my stomach and moved the wand around.

“Here’s the head, the hands, face, the feet. Do you want to know the gender?” she asked.

“Yes.” Brantley and I both said.

          “Congratulations, your having a…..”

Today was my baby shower and gender reveal party. My mom wanted to plan it. So I wouldn’t stress. The only thing I got to pick out was the gender reveal cake. Hopefully the baby shower want be too extravagant.

Brantley and I decided that we wouldn’t wear colors to give the gender away so I was in a black and white maxi dress with some comfortable flats; Brantley wore his nicer jeans and a yellow button up.

We had made plans to pick up the gender reveal cake, so that our nosy parents and sisters couldn’t find out.

We had received everything that was on our registry and then some at the shower. Evidentially everyone thought that we would have a girl, so to say that they were surprised to find out that we were having a boy was an understatement. Now to just meet little Joseph Kyler.
