RRRRIINNNG!
Virgil rushed to class. Why did he have to be late on the first day of school?!
Stupid dad with his stupid first day of school photo shoot.
He kept running through the now empty halls, and finally found his classroom. He walked in, interrupting the teacher, who turned to look at him. He sighed.
"Take a seat."
Virgil complied, taking an open seat near the back of the classroom. He looked around. It was a small class, only ten or twelve people. Obviously nobody wanted to take Statistics, which made sense. It was a hard class, and was different from most other math classes. He kept thinking about it, and didn't even notice that the teacher was asking questions now. At least, he didn't notice until the guy in front of him raised his hand.
"The mean."
"Exactly. Great job, Roman."
The teacher looked surprised that anybody knew at all. He continued lecturing, explaining how to work the problem, and once again Virgil had stopped paying attention. He instead pulled out his notebook, and sketched a dog. He kept sketching other things, smiling. And then trauma happened.
"Virgil, could you tell me what I would do with this problem?"
Virgil stiffened. He could feel eyes on him, and was about to have a panic attack when the guy in front of him, Roman, passed him a slip of paper. He quickly read it off, and the teacher nodded.
"Yes."
And then he mumbled something about how kids aren't supposed to be so smart and how he needs more coffee.
Virgil finally took the time to look up at the figure in front of him. He couldn't see much from behind him, but he could see the white t-shirt and combed brown hair. Virgil sighed and used his hand to try and comb his messy bangs. Maybe he should try to style his hair more often. He didn't notice the bell ring until Roman poked him in the arm.
"Wow. I guess that's twice I've saved you now."
Virgil felt his face redden and he quickly replied.
"No, I just was just distracted!"
Roman chuckled. And then grabbed his bag and stood up.
"See you around, Anxiety."
Virgil felt his face redden even more.
"Don't call me that!!"
~~~~~
Virgil navigated the dangerous halls. He hates high school with a passion. He likes a few classes though, like Art and English. He was still undecided about Statistics. He understood that he was above the average level in Math and English but he had a hard time paying attention during lectures. He slipped his headphones in and listened to P!ATD on his way to his next class. He looked down at his schedule and all his happiness was immediately gone.
His dad had said that Theatre would be a good opportunity for him to get out of his shell and make some friends.
He thought that Theatre would be a great excuse for a panic attack.
He sighed. There was no getting out of it now. He walked in just as the bell went off, and was surprised to see that the class was even smaller than Statistics, with only around seven people. He only recognized a few, and his breath caught in his throat when he saw Roman.
And all the regrets and anxiety came back to him.
He quickly sat down on one of the chairs in the room. Of the other people he saw, he recognized Thomas, a guy in the senior year that Virgil had had a few good run ins with. He also recognized a few other people that he couldn't remember their names.
The teacher cleared her throat.
"Hello students. My name is Mrs. Singh, and I would like to welcome you to Theatre. First off, wow this is a really small class. Second off, this is my first year here so I hope that we could do some good. My class is going to be a safe place for you all, and I won't force you to perform in front of anyone other than our group. I'm just going to try to push you a little out of your comfort zone, and make it easier to perform in front of people."
This doesn't seem so bad.
"Now, first off. I need you each to grab a partner and create a short act with a medieval theme."
Oh god the regrets.
Virgil's face reddened when Roman grabbed his arm.
"I call Virgil!"
