The four kits lay beside their mother. A dark gray she kit was pushed away several times by her siblings. The golden she cat noticed how much smaller this kit was.
"She's the runt of the litter," the mother had said. "She'll never make it through leaf-bare!" The small kit's struggle grew weaker, until she gave up and curled up in a corner. The siblings pushed closer to their mother, and the leader felt sorry for the small one.
"Pinetail," The golden she cat began, "Why don't you bring Stormkit closer to you?" Pinetail looked directly at her.
"She's not going to survive anyway." Pinetail growled. "You know that, Heatherstar." She wrapped her tail protectively around the other three kits, not even giving poor Stormkit a second glance.
"Fernheart? Will you care for Stormkit then?" Heatherstar asked. The gray queen opened one eye, shook her head and then closed it. Heatherstar sighed.
"Come here little one," Heatherstar called out to Stormkit. The kit blinked, but was too exhausted to move. Heatherstar picked Stormkit up, and carried her to the leader's den. "If they won't care for you, then I will." The golden she cat whispered. "I believe you will survive, even if no one else does." She curled up and the shivering kit, quickly falling asleep.
In her dream, many cats were whispering.
"She has come."
"She will fufill the prophecy."
Heatherstar padded among the cats with stars in their fur, looking for one in particular. "Cloverstar?"
A gray and white tom stepped out. "The cat of the prophecy has come." The cats began to whisper again.
"Even the smallest of storms can emerge stronger."
