A few days passed and the Hyakuya orphans discovered that their kidnappers weren't human. Vampires were not only real, but they had apparently wiped out the entire adult human race. They were told that anyone over 13 would die instantly if they stepped foot outside.
As for their purpose, the hundreds of kidnapped children were no more than livestock, kept alive for their blood.
The Hyakuya Orphans soon adapted to their new lives. Mika quickly became the unspoken leader of the group and looked out for everyone. Despite their situation, Kaneki was just happy to be with his family.
Unfortunately, it wouldn't last long.

"Those damn bloodsuckers." Yu grumbled, glaring at a nearby hooded vampire.
Kaneki turned his head to look at Yu, who was lying on his back on on of the large, curved chairs that lined the walls of the facility they were currently in. Around them, vampires were taking blood from the children and storing it in glass jars.
"It can't be helped." Mika replied, "Vampires are 7 times stronger than the average human."
"Then we'll have to train to get 7 times stronger! We'll kill the vamps and escape from this place!" Yu exclaimed.
"Keep it down dude, the vamps might hear you!" Hide cautioned, his voice just as loud as Yu's.
Kaneki nodded earnestly. "I have to agree with Mika. We can't beat them, so we should just cooperate and try to find their weakness."
"Shaddap nerd." Yu grumbled, puffing his cheeks out in irritation.
Hide blew a raspberry at Yu. "Says the dummy!"
"Say that again, I dare you!" Yu yelled, an irk mark appearing on his forehead.
Kaneki worriedly looked around, to see if any of the vampires had noticed the commotion. If they did, they didn't seem to care.
He returned his gaze to the bickering Yu and Hide. Mika had managed to get Yu to calm down, but Hide still wore a smug grin.
A pair vampires approached Mika and Yu, pining them down with one hand and holding a needle connect to a tube in another.
"Hold still." Came a gruff voice from under one of the hoods.
At that moment, Kaneki realized something important. The needles couldn't pierce his skin. He would be found out.
Just as he was desperately trying to figure out what to do, a hand roughly grabbed his shoulder, pinning him to his chair.
"Don't move." The vampire ordered as he stabbed Kaneki's neck with the needle.
As expected, the needle didn't pierce his skin. Kaneki worriedly looked up at the vampire to gauge his reaction. The vampire remained emotionless and pulled the needle back before forcefully bringing it down on his neck.
Snap
Kaneki winced as the needle broke on his skin. Almost in slow motion, the vampires lips moved.
"It's him."
Before Kaneki could react, he was surrounded by vampires. They pinned down Kaneki's arms and legs and Kaneki let out a yell of surprise, straining against the vampires. One of them approached him, holding a wet cloth.
The vampire pressed the cloth to his mouth and nose, covering them. Already gasping for breath from his struggling and yelling, Kaneki mistakenly inhaled. A sickly sweet scent invaded his lungs and Kaneki's vision began to go blurry.
No! He thought, desperately trying to stay awake. His body felt like lead and he suddenly found himself unable to move it.
In the corner of his eye, he saw Hide yelling and trying to get to him, only to be restrained by a vampire. Mika's voice and Yu's yells echoed in his ears and everything went dark.
