1am

That was the time he called you.

It was a bit unusual. He'd usually call you midnight on the dot, no matter what city or country.

But you knew what day it was.

It'd seem to have come too fast. Did four months really go by that quickly?

His face filled the screen. A smile plastered. He knew he couldn't fool you, but it didn't stop him from trying.

You didn't bother with the normal "how was the show?" You didn't say anything. You didn't need to. His eyes told you everything.

Some part of you found it funny. His eyes were normally blue like the ocean. And now they were wet like it, too. Like you could actually swim in it.

Red lines against the glossy white. An ugly shade of purple on the pale, smooth surface underneath. Even paler streaks where tears had left their mark.

It hurt. It really did, for all of you. You knew it was for the better, but some part of you longed for the old times.

You finally got around to a small conversation. But he was distant, and you knew his heart wasn't in it and honestly, you felt the same.

He passed his phone around so you could talk to everyone. Well, everyone that could talk at the moment.

Small talk was made. Kevin updated you on tour. Through her tears, Kirstin said that she missed you. Mitch tried to make a few jokes.

Anything to distract from the obvious.

Nichole asked how things were going, and when you were finally going to let her do your makeup.

You attempted a smile at the age-long debate and gave your same answer.

"When I feel like it."

Kate said for the umpteenth time that if she could fly you over, she would. You told her it was okay. Tour was basically over. You could survive another twelve hours without Scott.

Although both of you knew that's not what she meant.

And Esther. Oh Esther. You always knew she was a strong woman. The person that kept everyone in line. One of the hardest working people you've ever met.

She had a more composed stature. Like Nichole, she asked you how things were. You asked her how "the married life" was. You didn't want to ask the obvious question, but she knew you were thinking of it.

"It'll be something I'll have to get used to. But I know it's for the best. And I know our mom will be happy to see him a lot more," was what she said.

You asked her more questions. Anything to keep the conversation going. Anything to prolong the inevitable.

You didn't want to talk to him, but you knew you had to.

The phone was passed. He came into view, and your heart shattered.

His face was a mess. Even worse than Scott. Even worse than Kirstin.

You wanted to be angry at him. He was a bass. Not another lead vocalist. He was the foundation. The potatoes to meat. How could he just leave like that?

How could he just walk out of their lives?

How could he just walk out of your life?

He was your friend, he was a brother to you, the person you could turn to for anything.

He was the glue that held everything together.

And now it was all falling apart.

That solid structure, that stable building was collapsing piece by piece.

And it wouldn't be built again.

Not in the same way. That blueprint had changed now.

He told you everything was going to be fine. He told you he'd always be there for you no matter what.

You didn't want to believe him. But knowing him for the amount of time you have, you knew he was telling the absolute truth.

As his pale green eyes met yours, you knew he wasn't just stating the truth; he was making a promise.

And he wouldn't ever break it.

Scott took back his phone. You were actively crying now. He tried to comfort you as best as he could. He told you he'd be home soon, and not to worry. He said he loved you.

You could only nod.

He gave you one last attempt at a smile. Then a black screen.

That night when you went to bed, you made sure to leave the hallway light on.

I know it's Scott oneshots, but I felt the need to write this.

And no lie, I almost cried in the process

Avi will be missed. I thank him for all the people he's lifted up, the impact he's made, and being the light he is to others
