They call, and I cry. I hold her hand for a long time. When the paramedics get here, I back away so they can revive her. Nash comes over to me. He puts an arm around me. I look down, so scared. Then I hear it… she’s breathing again.

“Stephanie…”

I walk to her , and I fall to my knees. I kiss her forehead, still crying.

“I thought I was going to lose you.”

She looks at me, and smiles.

“I’d never leave you.”

I pick her up, and carry her to the car. I don’t buckle her up. I just get in, and hold her in my lap. The thought of her not being here scares me. I put her hair behind her ear. She’s asleep now, but when she wakes up, I hug her. This is the second time something happened. I don’t want anything to happen to her.

“Steff, something has happened twice. I’m scared.”

“I am too, I don’t want to lose you, or you lose me. A world without each other, isn’t a world worth living.”

I kiss her, and we ride in silence the rest of the time.

We get in the lobby and I see her family going up to meet us. Nash calls their names. They turn around, and see her in my arms, very pitiful. Her mom rushes over to us. Stephanie turns her head to her mom. She smiles at her, and her mom has slight relief.

“What happened to you guys… Hayes?”

“We were swimming, and we didn’t see it at first.”

“See what?”

“We were pulled under the water by a wave. I came up before her, and she was unconscious. We pulled her out, and we had to get the paramedics. She’s fine now. I was so scared for her.”

I take Stephanie upstairs to help her change. Everyone else stays in the lobby. When we get up there she looks like she has enough power to stand up. So I carefully put her down, and I help her balance herself. I go grab some clothes for her, and I help her change out of her bathing suit. When we’re done she sits on the bed. I ask if she wants me to carry her. She doesn’t respond. All she does is carefully stand up, walk over to me, and she stands there. She looks at me. I look into her eyes. She jumps on me, and doesn’t give me time to think, before she kisses me. My hands go up her shirt, and her hands are in my hair. I’m still I’m my swim suit, but even wet, I lay on the bed. She puts her hands on my stomach, and pulls away.

“Hayes, when we’re older… never mind.”

“I know, I know, I want it too.”

She kisses me again, but we know not to for too long, or someone might catch us again. She sits on the bed while I change quickly. I pick her up, and we go back downstairs.

When we get to the bottom of the stairs I let her walk the rest. She sits down with her mom, hugging her. Her mom got her something. She pulls it out, and it’s a flamingo ring. I wonder why a flamingo… then it hit me. It’s her favorite animal. She puts it on, and starts talking to everyone. She asks about how their days were, how everyone has been. She seems like she missed them a lot. I want her to stay with them for a while one day, but she wants to be with me, and I don’t want to argue. I go to the bathroom to clear my head. I don’t know why, but I’m so confused about everything. Yet I understand everything. It’s probably just so overwhelming for me. I walk back out, and Stephanie is making plans to go to a flamingo garden thing with her family tomorrow.
