Little wisps of snowflakes gently floated down, snuggling into Griffin's beanie and wavy hair. She smiled a small smile, and continued walking between the cover of the late afternoon sky. As her boots softly crunched into the small layer of newborn snow, she should hear the quiet chirps of the snow buntings in the birch trees. Thinking about the tranquility of the forest, she decided to stay for a while. Maybe until the sun touched the horizon. Maybe for a few more minutes. She would leave when the time felt right.
Griffin hung her backpack gently on a strong birch tree branch and her coat. It was chilly, yet unusually warm for a winter day. A rock was next to the tree; Griffin decided it looked comfortable enough.
As soon as she sat down, several woodland creatures that were hidden in their burrows and dens had began to peek out and inspect who it was. Realizing it was Griffin, the snow buntings, mice, squirrels, and deer scuttled from their homes to come greet her. A deer nuzzled Griffin's neck, several mice went deep into her coat pockets, a squirrel climbed onto her shoulder, and the snow buntings flew onto Griffin's backpack ( she had left some sunflower seeds in her lunch and Griffin was more than happy to share ).
Griffin never knew how or why the forest animals enjoyed having her around. They always flocked to her every time she took her walking route home, to greet her, or play with her, or use her body warmth as protection for the winter air.
Minutes passed, which went to fifteen minutes, to half an hour, to an hour..
By the time Griffin looked up, the sun had been long gone; the only light was from the full moon that night. I should get going; I don't want to worry Jay, Griffin thought. She stood up slowly, careful to give the squirrel time to find a way off her shoulder, and the mice very reluctantly allowed Griffin to set them on the ground. And just like that; she was alone again.
Retrieving her backpack from the branch and putting it over her shoulder, and sliding into her sleeves of her jacket, Griffin Bailey Sawyer set off into the night.
The night seemed to get colder and colder by the second, and get darker and darker. I stayed too long. This was a terrible idea. Pulling her white-sleeved red high school jacket closer to her body, she continued weaving through the trees. Five more minutes, she told herself repeatedly. Five more minutes.
-|+|- griffin's POV
This is terrible. I'm lost. I have no food, no water, and no way home. Fumbling clumsily for my phone with numb fingers, I dial Jay's number in the phone.
"Where are you? When will you be home? Are you okay? What happened?" Jay picks up almost immediately.
"I'm lost in the forest, I don't know when I'll be home, I'm okay, and I got carried away with the animals." Griffin took a deep breath and shuddered, looking at the time. 10:37 PM.
"I'll come get you."
"You have no chance. I'm too deep." I close my eyes and kind of whimper. It's freezing.
"Oh my god.." I can tell he's as frustrated as I am. "Did you try Guggle Maps--"
"--of course I have." I interrupt. "The only chance I ha--" I stop dead in mid-sentence. My heart goes a million miles per hour. My stomach drops.
"Griffin!" Jay can pick up on my distress.
"--I.." I hang up.
A low growl erupts from behind me. I slowly turn around. There's another one. Two. Three. Four. All matching growls, all matching animals, advancing on their prey.
Wolves.
I clench tightly to my backpack strap. You're in a dream, you're in a dream, wake up, wake up..
this isn't a dream.
I slowly reach in my backpack. Nothing sharp, nothing to set fire to, nothing silver. My hand locks around something. It's made its choice. I pull it out to see what it is.
A cheap, 50 cent wooden ruler.
It's all I have. I grab it at the bottom, and hold it like a sword.
The wolves don't like that. They growl louder and more aggressively. Not a good idea. Well, I can't back out now.
They take steps forward in unison, making the circle smaller and smaller, until I'm an arm's distance from them. A moment of silence.
Suddenly, a black wolf snarls and leaps for me. Instincts kick in and I swing my ruler as hard and as fast as I can. I nail it in the snout, hearing a loud crack not from its snout by my ruler. My hands are covered in my own blood; the ruler snapped, and the sharp metal edge sliced my hand. I close my hand and turn to the rest.
A grey wolf leaps and pins me down to the ground with his paws, and the look in his eyes easily translates; No more playing around. I scream loudly; in hope any passerby will hear. The rest get closer..
One by one, each wolf takes extracts three claws. Just three.
I scream louder. I've read enough in school to know what they're going to do!
The black wolf is is back. It growls menacingly, almost laughing as it extracts three claws. I'm going to die. Today is the day I die.
I shut my eyes, hoping to wake up. Wake UP!
I yell out in agony. He's dragging his claws deeply in my bicep, penetrating the skin. Slowly. So. Slowly.
"GOD!" I yell out, hyperventilating. Tears are pouring down my face. The pain is almost unbearable. It must've taken about thirty seconds, but to me it felt thirty centuries. The bright white one digs into my other arm with the three claws. I barely flinch. So much of my blood is spilling into the snow; my vision is blurring. I try to move, but I'm frozen. I'm as stiff as a board.
Just.. move..!
My vision cuts out, my brain whirring. I flimsily attempt to cover my neck with my hands, but the black wolf easily shoves them aside. Torturingly, he almost grins and opens his mouth, leaning in. "N-nooo... nOoOO!!"
BLACK.
