We, gods, only have power when people believe in us, so if nobody does, we become nobodies. If we have been struck by this fate, we can choose to live between the mortals, deprived of any power we used to own with only our immortality left to distinguish us from the humans, or choose to be a servant for the gods people do believe in. For as long as we can remember, this is the way things were. No one was quite pleased with this arrangement, but it was the only way to prevent the forgotten from taking the power from the believed.
