Demi

I wake up to Nick calling my cell. I sigh and let it go to voicemail. I finally get out of bed and get ready for work. I may have to be at work in an hour, but it doesn’t hurt to get ready now. I step into the shower and think what Nick could possibly want. I finish up and listen to his voicemail.

‘Hey, Dem,’ he pauses. ‘I just want you to know I’m leaving this afternoon to try and get help for my problems. I know I have some; by the way I’ve been acting for the past few years. I just figured that I could at least get some support from you. Maybe after, we can finally reconnect as best friends again, since we did drift apart a little after I started committing these crimes. I just hope you can finally forgive me after this is all done with.’

I finish getting ready with his voicemail on my mind. I shake my head at the thought. He hurt me too many times with his criminal activity. What if I do want him to find his inner demons and destroy them? Is there still hope for all criminals if he destroys his demons? I bite my lip.

--

I have my last table of the day. As I come to a stop at the table, I recognize the faces. Maya and Selena.

“What are you guys doing here?” I ask, trying not to get too excited.
“Well, I came to New York to see my parents,” Maya starts. “And Selena let me stay at her house, since we all know how my parents are.” She sighs.
“And I was planning a surprise visit for you and Nick,” Selena adds. “And I just added Maya to my trip. And speaking of which, where is Nick?”
“H-He’s getting help,” I don’t mean for my voice to shake. “As you guys may remember, he’s been committing crimes. And called me this morning and left a voicemail saying he knows something is wrong with him, and is going to get help for it.” I look down. “Also, saying that he hopes to rekindle our friendship, because we did drift apart.” I shift my eyes to make sure no one else is watching.
“Oh, well, that’s good, I guess,” Selena says.
“Yeah, I guess so,” I sigh. “Let me just take your orders before my manager comes around.”

--

Maya and Selena had stayed until I got off my shift. Which I do appreciate them waiting for me. They still are the same since before they had moved away.

“So, what have you guys been up to?” I ask.
“I work for MTV,” Selena says after a few minutes. “I know I told you about that.” She jokes.
I laugh, knowing she’s right.
“Well, I can’t top that,” Maya says, still laughing. “But I work for a radio station in Japan, just doing sound effects. I started not that long ago.”
“At least those jobs are better than what I do,” I sigh. “What a great way to start the career I really want to do.” I mumble.
“You’ll get there,” Maya’s smile was comforting. “Don’t doubt yourself. You’re an amazing singer.”
“Yeah, and I can help you,” Selena adds. “There are a lot of talent scouts at the studio back in New York, Dem. We can record some of your songs, and I can hand them over when I get back to New York. I can even fly you there so you can meet them.”
“Thanks, but honestly,” I sigh. “I don’t think my songs are that good.”
“Stop talking like that!” they both say in unison. I sigh. Maybe I am good enough.

--

It’s almost midnight and I hear my phone buzz, letting me know I have a text. I’m still with Maya and Selena, since I didn’t want to be disconnected by reading and answering a silly little text.

“Dem, if you want, you can answer the text,” Selena says. “We don’t mind, and it looks like you are a little upset over it.”
“I’m fine,” I say through gritted teeth. I hate that they do this to me. “I can read it later.” I hear another buzz from my phone and became annoyed.
“Seriously, Demi” Selena sighs. “We get it. We know how much you’ve been working and everything with Nick and all. You never know.”
I sigh as I look at my texts. Nick. It doesn’t surprise me. “How did you even know it had to be something about Nick, Sel?” I ask, a little annoyed.
“You guys live in the same building, and I did hear about some of his crimes through Joe,” she points out. “And you know I’m pretty close with Joe, and so is Maya.”
I only nod in agreement. Joe was one of the Jonas’ that we’re still really close with. Only Nick and Joe, though. Kevin has his own thing with Danielle and their daughter, and Frankie always had hanged around my little sister, Maddie, though, he did hang out with us a few times.

I read my texts from Nick.
“Hey, Dem. I found out earlier today my problems. They said that nothing was there, surprisingly. But they are providing me some numbers from counselors, who I did talk to one of them and will be seeing again sometime soon. Hope to see and talk to you soon.” The first text said.
I sigh as I read the next text.
“I’m in my apartment if you need anything from me. You know where I am. I hope you will talk to me again, after what had happened.”
I don’t know what takes over me to say what I say, but I reply back.
