Chapter 19
"What do you know about him?"
"His hair is short and black, his eyes are brown, and his first name is Matthew."
The policeman nodded and wrote it down. "How often did you say you saw him?"
"Last Friday, Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, and today twice."
He nodded again. "He seems to be escalating then, and quickly. We'll keep watch over your house and wait for him to show up before bringing him in for questioning. Now I'll just need your address..."
I was silent on the drive home. Going to the police made it seem too real. I didn't like it.
"Liliana?" asked Evan, drawing my face from the cold glass. "Are you okay?" He was glancing between me and the road.
I nodded. "Fine. But I'd like to talk to Rebeca, do you know where she lives?"
"Yeah. Want me to wait?"
I shook my head. "She'll drive me back. I'll be awhile, I think, you should get back."
He nodded. After a few minutes of silent driving, he pulled into a driveway and stopped. "Be sure she waits for the door to close before leaving when she drops you off." I nodded.
"I will."
"I'll see you tomorrow," he waved as he backed out.
I waved back, walking into the house. "Hi, Rebeca." I closed the door behind myself.
"What's up? You disappeared after the game." She led me to her couch and sat down with her brow furrowed.
I told her all that had been going on and saw her glance once toward her bedroom window before she got up and pulled the shades over it.
"Evan told me some things, but not much. I wondered if you could answer my questions, since you've known him so long."
"I might. Some things I can't share though." I nodded.
"My first question is about his mom. Did you know her?"
"No. Mr. Walker moved here soon after she passed, that's when I met Evan."
"Did he ever talk about her?"
She shook her head. "Only to answer my questions."
"Was he a Christian when you met?"
"Yes. He told me his mom brought him and his dad every week."
I but my lip, not sure if I should ask this question; it was the one I feared. "Why is he so protective of me? We've known each other for only a few months."
"There is no easy answer to that question."
