-16 years later-
Today was my 16th birthday. And nothing was going to screw it up, like all the ones before. I put on ripped, high-waisted jeans, a cropped striped shirt, and white converse. My short brown hair was loosely curled and my makeup was lightly applied. I swung my backpack over my left shoulder and headed downstairs. In the kitchen, my busy family was waiting for me.
My younger brother Mike was arguing with my younger sister Carlee, my lazy father was half asleep on the couch, and my struggling mother was racing around the kitchen, desperately trying to feed our family. I, attempting to avoid my siblings, grabbed two waffles and started to head for the door,
"Wait! Y/N! Give me a hug before you leave, it's your birthday!" My mom ran over to squeeze me tight.
"Thank you mom but I'm in a rush, Peter's waiting for me." I pleaded. She patted my back and kissed the crown of my head,
"Go ahead, have a good day." She half smiled.
"You too!" I ran out the door and hopped on my bike.I rode down a few blocks and viewed the city of Queens. I finally reached my best friend Peter's apartment, or should I say, only friend. We always biked to school together to avoid getting jumped or something outrageously stupid like that. Peter and I weren't what you would consider cool, but in our heads, we were pretty cool. I walked up to his place and knocked on the door covered in chipped paint. The door swung open to reveal a huge grin on peters face.
"Happy Birthday!" Peter cheered and gave me a hug.
"Why thank you Peter," I blushed, "We should get going."
"Ok let me grab my bike," peter said as he scanned his living room for his bike. Peter quickly found it and ran back outside. Peter was wearing what he always wore- a shirt with a math or science pun on it, and jeans. His hair was slicked back with gel, and his scent was a strong cologne."Did you study for the chemistry test?" I asked peter as we entered our noisy school.
"Oh shit! I totally forgot." Peter stomped his foot in fury. I laughed and placed my hand on his shoulder,
"Don't worry, you'll do great. Just remember what we talked about in class yesterday. We reviewed everything." Peter glared at me and replied,
"I missed chemistry yesterday, I showed up to school late." He groaned. Peter was always randomly leaving and showing up and leaving. Whatever we were doing, he would suddenly excuse himself then come back 20 minutes later. Peter has been acting strange for the past six months. I knew he had a secret, but I had one too. Actually, I had two secrets. The first is that I've been in love with peter since the 6th grade. Ever since cooties weren't a thing, his dark brown eyes and his curly, frizzy hair stuck out to me. His smile brightened the room and the crinkles by his eyes when he smiled made my heart melt. He always stuck up for me too, he was just generally a great guy.
"What?" Peter asked as I snapped out of it.
"Hmm?" I perked up.
"You were staring at me..."
"Oh sorry, I didn't get much sleep and I keep zoning out." I lied. But the thing is, I'm always lying. I have a huge secret that NO ONE knows about. My whole life I've been able to control things with my mind. I'm like Matilda, except, my nose bleeds and I can have the energy in my body completely drained.
(you're basically eleven from stranger things)
On the bright side I can heal pretty quickly since I'm not 100% human. Or at least I don't think so.
I can't tell anyone because I'm afraid the government will use me as their little experiment. I don't feel the need to use my power often since it drains energy, but when it comes in handy, it comes in handy.Right before lunch I headed to my locker, I was little too excited for the pizza I packed in my lunch but I guess there's nothing wrong with enjoying the little things.
I always had to attempt my combination a couple of times before my locker unlocked, this school was so old and was in desperate need of a renovation. I grabbed my lunch which was stuffed in a paper brown bag and went to grab my chemistry book so I could help Peter before the test. But before I could reach, my locker was slammed shut. I turned to my right to find Flash smirking in my direction.
"Y/N, Y/N, Y/N, what do we have here?" Flash snatched the bag out of my hands and looked inside. "I'll be taking this." Flash laughed and started to walk away. A crowd of flash's friends had formed and laughed along with him. I quickly knew what to do. I concentrated really hard and instantly wiped my nose. When I opened my eyes flash was frozen still and dropped my lunch.I made flash pee himself.
Immature, I know, but freaking hilarious. The crowd of flash's friends started cracking up while I grabbed my lunch and ran, I didn't want anyone to know I had anything to do with this.
When I got to the cafeteria I saw peter, who was patiently waiting for me at an empty table.
"Sorry I was late," I apologized.
"No you're fine," peter assured me, "but where's your textbook?" I slammed my hand on the table and sighed.
"Sorry, there was a little incident with Flash, I wasn't able to grab it." I replied.
"Oh that's ok, we don't need to study, it's your birthday." Peter grinned. I reached into my bag and handed peter a slice of pizza since he couldn't afford lunch. We grazed the cafeteria and privately judged all the kids in our school. There was the jocks, the extreme nerds, the hipsters, the aesthetically pleasing, the sexually confused, the depressed punks, the popular group (which included flash), and us. The coolest losers ever.
"Hey, my mom wanted to invite you and Aunt May over for dinner tonight if that's alright" I told peter. Peter finished chewing his food and looked up at me,
"Sounds great! What time should I be there?"
"Uhh, I think it was 6pm. Yep. 6pm."
"Ok, we'll be there." There was an awkward silence I wanted to break so I started up a new conversation,
"If you could have a super power, what would you be?" I asked. Peter looked shocked for a second but relaxed as he answered the question,
"Idk, I think that spider guy is pretty cool, you?"
"He is pretty cool, a little overrated, but I guess he helps the city out." I replied. Recently there has been this spider guy dressed in spandex that's roaming around the city. I've always wanted to join him but I can't get the courage or find the time to make a 'suit'.
"Really? What makes him so overrated?" Peter sounded surprisingly offended.
"Idk, maybe he needs a partner in crime, you can tell he's just a kid." Peters eyes widened when I told him that. "Peter, what's wrong?" I asked.
"Oh, nothing. I think he's pretty independent. He doesn't need no man to help him fight crime." Peter jokingly sassed. I simply rolled my eyes and laughed. When suddenly I felt a tap on my shoulder, I turned around to meet flash. This time he was wearing different pants.
"How the hell did you do it 'nose bleed'?" He demanded answers, "Did you put something in my drink, I'm not your little experiment."
"Flash, sweetie, don't blame me that you aren't potty trained." I snarled. Flash's eyes raged with fury as he pulled back an arm to punch me. But when his fist was just a few centimeters away from my face, it stopped. I turned to peter and saw that he had grabbed flash's wrist before he could make contact.
"Whoah, your reflexes are amazing." I said in awe. Flash winced in pain and slowly backed up,
"You two, are MUTANTS. AND IM NOT CRAZY!" Flash ran away like a little kid and held his bruised wrist. Peter turned to me and asked,
"What was he talking about?"
"Oh, when he tried to steal my lunch he just froze and um... peed himself." Peter started cracking up laughing. He couldn't believe what I just said.
"He did what now?!" Peter cackled.
"Yeah I don't know what happened but it was hilarious!" I giggled.
