Jack pushed me behind him and backed us up against the wall, away from the man. I gripped the back of Jacks shirt and focused on my breathing.
In. Out. In. Out. In- "Now, lets play a game called Hangman." The air left my body, leaving me breathless as he scanned the room. "You." He pointed towards a boy named Caleb. Caleb paled and backed up. "No, no please-" "Shut it!" The man said, and Caleb clamped his mouth shut.
He grabbed him by the shirt and held the knife to his throat. "Now, this is how we play. I an going to think a word, and you have to guess the letters. If you get one wrong, I cut a part of his body. 5 strikes, and I slit his throat. Ready?" Caleb cried out as tears streaked down his face. "I don't want to die! P-please!" The man chuckled. "Thats up to your classmates. Now, you-" He pointed at Zoe. She paled as Josh put an arm in front of her, glaring. "Give me a letter." I saw Zoe swallow and felt sorry for her. My hands were shaking as I gripped Jacks shirt. "A-a." She said.
The man tsked and put the knife to Calebs arm, slicing his skin. Caleb whimpered as blood dripped from the wound and onto the floor. Zoe put her hand to her mouth. I paled. Oh my god. The man grinned, as if he found pleasure from other peoples pain. Sick bastard. He turned his head and pointed at Jack.
"Pretty boy." He said, jerking his chin at Jack. "A letter." A muscle popped in his jaw as he spoke. "U." His voice was strong, and I envied how he could be so calm in this situation.
The man smiled. "Nice job." He cocked his head to the side and called on about three more people. All of them lost. Caleb was a bleeding, sobbing mess. The man held the blood soaked knife to his throat. He looked around the room, and his gaze landed on my. "Blondie." He smiled. "So nice to see you again. My breaths quickened and Jack squeezed my hand.
I let out a shaky breath. "Not sure I can say the same about you, Hans." He smiled that chilled me to the bone. "Pick a letter." I clenched my teeth together and clutched Jacks hand so tight Im surprised it didn't break. Jack noticed and glared at him. "She doesn't have to do shit." Hans bent his head, and oh, if looks could kill. Jack stared right back, and dear god, someone give these two a medal.
Hans smiled. "Fine. Ill just kill him right away then." He was about to end Caleb, but I cried out before he could. "E!" I yelled. "I pick E." Hans again tsked and shook his head. "Sorry guys. You lose." It happened so fast. He flicked his arm back and blood splattered on his clothes as Caleb fell to the floor in a dead heap. Hid eyes stared upward, lifeless.
I put my hand to my mouth amd cried out, dropping to my knees. Oh god. Hes dead. Calebs dead. And its my fault.
Hans laughed and headed for the door. "Now, this next game is easy and simple." He looked around the room. "Ukryc'." Then he left, leaving the door behind him.
The class looked around in confusion. They didn't know what it meant. But I did. And Hans knew I did. "What the hell does that mean?" Jack boomed as he knelt next to me, my grip on his hand still tight.
"Hide." I said softly. The class looked at me. "What was that, Snowflake?" Jack asked softly. I looked up at him, tears in my eyes, then at the class. "He wants us to hide." I said a little louder. It was dead silence. Then all hell broke loose. People piled out of the class, running out to find a place to hide. Jack helped me up as we went out of the room. "Shouldn't we plan?" A girl, Vanissa, said. "Plan? Hes gonna kill us!" Josh exclaimed. He was holding Zoes hand, who still looked frightened by what just happened.
"Shouldnt we call the police?" Someone said. Jack shook his head. "Theres no signal. And he cut off the wifi." Now people were screaming and yelling. But I just stood there. This was all my fault. I didnt guess the right letter and now Calebs dead. We're all going to die because of me.
"Im sorry." I said. Everyone looked at me. "Im so sorry. This is my fault." K chocked on my breath and let out a sob as tears went down my cheeks. Jack put his hand on my cheek, turning my head so I looked at him. "Its not your fault Elsa." I let out another sobbed. "Yes it is! Everything is my fault!" My voice cracked as more tears came and Jack pulled me into his embrace.
"She's right." Someone said. "If she guessed the right letter, Caleb wouldnt be dead and we wouldn't be running for our damn life!" Jack pulled away and got up in his face. "Don't you dare blame her!" He pointed at him then at the security camera on the cieling. "This is all that sick bastards fault! Not hers." He backed away and at that moment I loved him so much. I smiled the best I could, reached up on my toes, and kissed him. He kissed me back woth hunger and thirst, then pulled back breating heavily. He took my hand and as he looked at the group that still stayed and didnt run off.
"We need to team up. Go against him. Fight back. Kill this murdering little bastard." Someone shouted a protest. It was Jake. "Thats a dumb idea!" He yelled. Jack eyed him. "If you dont like it, you can leave." Jake looked around. He hesitated, then stayed. Ha. Jack looked at me then at the group. He loweres his face. "We split up. Teams of two or three, and distract him. Im assuming he locked all exits, try the windows. Try anything to get out. Any chance you get, you take it." Everyone agreed and we paired up. I was with Jack.
He took my hand, brought it to his lips and kissed my palm. "We will get through this. I promise, Snowflake." I gave him a nod and a sad smile. Lets just hope all things go as plan, and no one else dies today. Lets all hope Jacks promise doesnt get broken.
