She's my best friend, we do everything together. We always have, ever since grade six.
I look at her, she's not even paying attention, so I jab her in the side of her ribs.
"I'm bored Annie, let's go do something!" I whine, I'm getting bored in the stuffy house.
She looks at me with a disapproving look, "Emily, you literally have the attention span of a wombat."
"Eh, it's not my fault." I shrug,
She rolls her eyes at me, "Well then Em, whaddya wanna do?"
"Can we go get ice cream?" I ask, "It's been forever since I've had any!"
Annie snaps her head in my direction, "Dude, you and I literally ate a litre of ice cream each last night!" She exclaims,
"Well I'm hungry now!" I whine, and flash her a pleading look,
"Alright, let's go get some ice cream." She gives in,
"Yesss!" I exclaim, "Come on Annie!"
We head out to our bikes, and start to ride the few kilometres to the ice cream shop.
When we get there we park our bikes at the front of the shop, then head inside the cool air conditioned shop.
"Back again ladies?" The shop assistant asks,
"Yes Theo, we're back again. This one," Annie points to me "Wanted ice cream. Again."
I smile innocently at Theo, "What can I say? I love my ice cream."
We sit down at a booth after paying for the ice cream, sitting in silence becomes awkward. We both know what the other is thinking.
"What are we going to do?" She whispers,
I stop eating my ice cream for a second, and look at my spoon.
"I don't know, I really don't know."
We sit in silence for a few more seconds, "You have to go back, you know."
"I know, but it's a war zone right now."
I take another lick of my ice cream, "They're worried sick about you, your phone has been ringing non stop for the past few days."
Just on cue her phone starts to ring, her screen lights up with her mum's contact details. Just as she is about to press decline, I grab her phone from her.
"You need to talk to them." I answer the call and hand it to her, "I'll be right here."
I give her hand a squeeze, and she gives me a small smile as she answers the phone.
"Mum?" She chokes out.
