Alyssa's P.O.V.:
The wind howled as people ran across streets and into offices or buses, trying their best to dodge the rain.
I threw my long brown hair behind my shoulders and dodged a stranger as they shot past me, slashing my jeans with water as they passed.
I love the rain. I really do, but sometimes it got my nerves. Like now, when the wind was howling too much for me to use an umbrella.
I quickly made my way into the Chicago Med ED and took a second to gain my composer before walking forwards.
I was new here, my first day in fact.
Only my third day in the city. I had spent the other two days unpacking and having anxiety about this moment. The moment where I would walk into my new job and pray to whatever the hell was up there that it would end okay.
I knew it would be tough, you see I'm part of a trail of sorts. Chicago Med is trying out two doctors for three months and at the end of that, the chief of the ED makes a decision about which one will stay. I can't believe I agreed to this, I should have just gone to Seattle where I would have definitely had the job. But there's always been something about Chicago that drew me towards it, I just hope that I don't end up jobless in three months.
"You must be Dr Venster?"
I spun around to see a woman in a pants suit looking at me quizzically. God I hate when people pronounce my surname wrong, but I don't want to seek snobbish so I'll correct it later.
"Yes," i responded, trying not to sound so startled, "and you must be Ms Goodwin?"
"I am indeed, come up to my office we some forms you need to fill in before I intrude you to the rest of my staff."
We headed up to Goodwin's office where i filled in all the forms and was given some scrubs to change into.
I quickly put her hair in a messy plait and changed.
I paused for a second before i walked out of the locker room. Ms Goodwin said there would be a nurse called Maggie waiting for me when i left the room. She would introduce me to the rest of the staff and the other doctor who I would be competing against in a sense.
This was the moment i had been dreading, the moment where I would be under every doctor's scrutiny.
With a deep breath, I opened the door and stepped outside. The nurse was nice enough, she gave off the feel that she was really the one in charge around here.
Once we reached the nurse's station, Maggie called everyone together. She motioned for a man to come stand on the other side of her. He was about a head shorter than me (I am quite tall, but not that tall) and had greasy blonde hair that was tied back into a ponytail.
"Attention," dozens of doctors and nursing staff turned to face her, "as you all know, we have a two new doctors that will we joining us for three months, after that Ms Goodwin will make a decision on which one will stay," she posted noted towards the man, "this is doctor Joshua Michaels, he specializes in emergency medicine."
Joshua stepped up l like he expected some kind of applause, when he didn't get any he stepped further behind Maggie.
Then she pointed towards me,"And this is Alyssa Venster and she specializes in Emergency Medicine and is an orthopedic surgeon as well. She's also an ex army doc."
"And," a voice piped in from the back, "you pronounce her surname with an 'f' not a 'v' so it's Fenster to all us regular people."
I couldn't believe my eyes when Dr Choi stepped forwards from the crowd.
"Hey Ali," he said, "long time no see."
"ETHAN," I half screamed and pulled him into a hug, "I didn't know you were here!"
"Umm," someone else piped in, I turned around to see a man with Weasley worthy red hair, "you wanna explain how you two know each other?"
"Ali served as a volunteer doctor up in Baghdad with me, she's pretty badass. By far the best at ortho that I've ever seen," Ethan responded.
"Okay," I said, pushing him playfully, "now you're making me blush."
Maggie stepped between us, "Alright here's how things will work, Ali, that is what people call you right?"
"Yeah," I quickly added in.
"Great. Well Ali, you will stick with Dr Halstead today so that you can get the run of the place. Joshua, you will go with Dr Choi for the same reason."
Everyone walked away and seemed to go back to being busy. Ethan walked away with Joshua, while a just awkwardly stood in the middle of the ED hoping this 'Dr Halstead' would come to me.
"Hey," a voice cut through, I spun around to see the same red headed man that cut in earlier, "I'm Dr Halstead."
"Oh," I awkwardly responded (I'm not the best at peopleing), "I'm Dr Venster."
"Yup, but I'm gonna call you Ali. It's easier."
"Eh," I responded, "works for me."
He took me on a lap of the ED, showing me where everything was. While he was explaining the computer system, we started talking.
"So," he started, "an army doc?"
"Yup."
"You guys are always a little crazy. But in a good way."
I laughed and leaned over to look at what he was typing, "what about you? No serving experience?"
"Nah," he responded, moving over for me to try the computer, "my brother is the soldier. Well the ranger."
"Huh," I said, not really paying attention, "he still over there?"
"No, got back a couple years ago. He works for PD now," he motioned for me to follow him into the locker room thing.
"Oh really? He make the transition okay?"
"I think so, he was a little rough at first. But he seems to be doing okay now. Not that I don't worry."
I leaned against the counter as he took out some files, "Yeah I get it. I still get calls from my mom checking I'm not slowly going insane."
"Yeah I feel like calling him and checking too. Not that he answers me."
I laughed, "Yeah we tend to do that... what's his name anyway?"
"Oh it's J-"
"SHOOTING VICTIMS COMING IN. ALL HANDS ON DECK."
We glanced at each other before rushing out and just like that, it was back to normal. Will and I tag teamed patients. Him taking all flesh wounds, me handling everything that went through bone. We made a good team, not really needing to tell the other what we were doing. Simply getting it done.
We had just finished with our last patient when I heard the familiar sounds of machines going crazy in the next room.
Will and I glanced at each other once again before making a break for the room.
