Alyssa's P.O.V.:
"Morning Ali!" Will called as I walked into the ED the next day. It was strange how comfortable I was becoming here.
Usually that was a great sign, but I always have the thought in my mind that I might not be here in four months.
Dr Michaels might get the job and I'll be sent packing all the way back to South Africa.
"Hello? Hello? Anyone there?" I saw a hand wave in front of my face.
"Sorry," I said, turning to find a doctor with gelled back black hair, "I must have zoned out."
"It's okay," he said, "happens to all of us. Anyway, I'm Dr Connor Rhodes. Cardiac surgeon. I would have introduced myself yesterday but I got called up to the OR."
He held out his hand and I shook it.
"No problem," I responded, "pleasure to meet you. I'm Alyssa Venster, most people call me Ali. Emergency medicine and orthopedic surgery."
"I've been made aware," he responded, "ex army too huh?"
"Yup."
Just then we got interrupted by the other new doctor.
"Sorry," he said, pushing in front of me and addressing Dr Rhodes, "I didn't get he chance to meet you yesterday. I'm doctor Joshua Michaels."
He held out his hand to shake but Rhodes merely gave him a nod.
"I know who you are, heard you made the quite the... impact on the ED yesterday."
Joshua looked offended for a second, "Oh come on, anyone could have nicked that artery!"
Connor put his hands in the air, "Alright then," and walked away."Anyway," Joshua said, finally acknowledging my presence, "there's something I want to talk to you to about."
"Okay," I said, packing my 'normal' clothes away in my locker, "what's up?"
"Well," he started, "I just want to make something clear. I know that all of this is a trail and that we're meant to have an equal chance and all. But at the end of the day, I will be the one staying."
"I'm sorry," I said, turning to face him, "but like you said, equal chance. You won't be provoking me into doing anything, if that's what you're trying. At the end of the day, the better doctor will be the one getting the job."
He smirked and turn to walk away, but as he reached the door he stopped and turned to face me once more.
"You're right, the better doctor will come out on top. And I highly doubt that will be the doctor found out to be a bit too close with let's say... Dr Halstead?"
Before I could replay he left.
What the hell? Nothing happened between me and Will, hell we weren't even alone together. Sure, I spent the most time with him yesterday but that was because Maggie told me to!
Joshua can't possible spin that story can he? Its plain ridiculous.
"Well you look happy," I heard a familiar voice say.
"Hey Ethan," I didn't even have the energy to reply with something sassy.
"Okay," he began, packing his clothes in his locker, "for once the ED isn't hectic. So we have a few minutes. We need to talk."
"What? Why? What did you hear?" Instantly I was anxious, what if Joshua had already told someone?
"Nothing?" He leaned forward, looking confused, "what should I have heard?"
"Oh nothing. Just me being me. Anyway," I sat down opposite him, "what do we need to talk about?"
"How are things?"
Out of all the things for him to ask, I never expected to be that.
"What do you mean? Things are great!"
"Alyssa," his voice showed that he wasn't kidding, "you're like family to me. You know that. Which is why I want to know if you're okay. After the... accident."
Here we go. What this was really about.
"Call like it was Ethan. Explosion."
"Fine. How are you after the explosion? I heard you weren't in a great state."
I laughed. That was an understatement.
"Look," I began, "yeah things were tough for a while. But I'm okay."
He looked like he was about to talk again but Maggie barged in.
"Hey, sorry to interrupt. Ali, what's the bet you can pop a shoulder back into place quicker than almost anyone in this hospital?"
Ethan chuckled, "She's the best."
Maggie's only response was to wave her hand and walk out. I got up and followed her.
"PD have a suspect. They need him out of here and into an interview room as soon as possible," she said.
"Got it," I replied, walking to the ED room she was pointing at.
"Oh and Ali," I turned to face her, "apparently the whole district has been looking for this guy. So make it quick."
"Got it."Jay's P.O.V.:
I can't believe that bastard tripped down the stairs and managed to dislocate his shoulder.
Now I'm the lucky guy who gets the take this idiot up to Med and sit there for an hour while he gets pain meds that he most certainly doesn't deserve.
"Maggie," I called as I entered the ED, "this idiot dislocated his shoulder."
She nodded and pointed me towards a room.
After sitting there for a few minutes she entered again.
"What happened?" she asked.
"He tripped while running down some stairs trying to outrun me."
Maggie chuckled, "Well that worked out well didn't it?"
The guy muttered something under his breathe that did not sound very polite.
"You wanna say that louder?" I said, walking closer.
"Woah," Maggie said, "calm down. I'll find someone who can fix that shoulder and get him out of here."
"Thanks."After a few minutes of the guy sneaking dirty glances my way, someone entered the room.
I wasn't prepared to see her again.
"What happened here?" she asked, putting on some gloves.
For a second I couldn't reply, the sound of her voice was different to what I was used to. It was accented in a weird way, almost British but not quite.
"Hey? Any body in there?" she asked, looking a bit concerned, "should I be examining you too?"
"What?" I asked dumbly, well done Jay. You blew it already.
"I asked," she said, Walking closer to the guy, "what happened?"
"He chased me!" the guy shouted.
"Don't you mean," she said as she began to inspect the shoulder, "you ran?"
I chucked, she was something else.
"Yes," I said, "yes he does."
"Well," she started, "it's no secret that your shoulder is dislocated. Shouldn't take much to pop it back in though."
"Woah woah woah," the guy leaned further back, "what about pain meds? And recovery period?"
She rolled her eyes and turned to face me (I tried not to look terrified).
"What is your name?" she asked.
"Jay."
"Well, Jay," my name sounded amazing in her accent, "how urgent do you need to question this person?"
"As soon as possible."
"Would you need him to be free of any drugs when doing so?"
"Yes."
As soon as I answered she turned to the guy again and took ahold of his arm and shoulder.
"Alright," she said, "on three I'm going to pop it back in. Just relax, I assure you this won't be the worst part of your day."
I choked down a laugh when she said that, she has a sense of humour. That's a good sign.
"One. Two."
"AAAH BITCH."
"Pleasure."
With that she sent a wink my way and walked out.
Wow.Alyssa's P.O.V.:
I threw myself into the chaos of the ED and tried my best to ignore what just happened.
I have no idea what's wrong with me! Why am I acting like a school girl?
He's just a guy.
The same guy that was looking at me last night.
The same guy I couldn't stop thinking about. So maybe he's not just a guy...
"What's up with you?" someone asked.
I spun around to see Natalie standing behind me looking confused.
"You've been standing in the passage for a good couple minutes."
"What?" I asked, finally moving forward to the nurse's station.
"Yup," she said, "so what's up?"
"Its nothing."
"Umm," she started, "no it's not. Come on!"
"Alright fine," I began, "I just fixed a guy's shoulder that PD wanted. Just a little rattled by the cop. That's all."
"Which cop?"
I wanted to just pretend to not know his name and be done with it. But I couldn't do that knowing that Natalie might know something.
"Jay..."
She looked shocked, "But he's usually so nice! What happened? What did he do?"
"No he was nice. Just something weird you know?"
She thought for a second, "Okay I have an idea. How about we put this conversation on pause and I come over tonight and we can talk slash unpack some of your stuff?"
I thought about for a second, "Okay. That sounds good."
As she walked away she stopped a second and turned around, "Why don't I bring some other people over? Like April and Maggie?"
"Course."-------------------------------
Yeah I'll admit it's a bit of a filler chapter....
But you'll find out more about Ali's past in the next one!
Next update on Thursday :)
