How many times have you read a book that began with the words: "Hello, my name is..." In fact, how many times have you written a book that started like that (E1)?Of course, there's really no harm in it at the end of the day, but if you're looking to become a professional writer, then I would suggest thinking about your starting sentence a bit more.
The first sentence that your readers read (excluding the disclaimers in the beginning of the book if you have them), is usually one of the most - if not the most - important sentences in the book. The sentence that everybody first reads is supposed to hook them into continuing the book. People won't get easily hooked if you start off by saying the character's name and age.
So, when writing, think about what would hook the reader. Think about interesting lines or quotes to entice them into reading more (E2).
I will admit, I have made the "Hello, my name is..." mistake in the past, but I've learned from my mistakes, and I now know to start my book with an interesting idea so my readers will have a great experience in reading what I worked hard on. Try and keep that fourth wall closed.
E1: Hi, My name is Mandy and I am 16 years old, and I am a magical witch.
E2: I could feel sparks of electricity flow through my body and to my fingertips as I heard people repeating my name over and over again, telling me to control the magic.
