The Gem

On the Run

Belle was above us soaring through the air occasionally ducking down towards the ground to make sure she was going the right way. I was running right next to Carmen, holding the gem as I ran. I needed to make sure I didn't break it, or let it roll away. I knew this was what everyone was looking for, every mutant on this earth was looking for this gem. The gem that I held ever so carefully in my hands. I looked down at the gem and saw how the purple color sparkled in the sunlight. I looked up and continued to run. 

I didn't know what we were going to do with this gem, if we were going to find a home far far away, where nobody would ever find us, and keep it. Or if we would have to destroy it to make sure nobody would have the power, that everyone would be equal. Or if we would just pass it on to Carmen's family or The Others. The sun started to fall and night came upon the world. The breeze was cool and the trees began to sway in the wind. The moon shined over us as we ran. We continued to run through the night, hoping we wouldn't have to make a stop. When the sun started to rise Belle dropped down and looked at us. "I'm exhausted..Can we take a break?" 

I nodded and stopped running and so did Carmen. Belle landed a couple feet behind us and then walked up to us brushing off the dirt that was on her jeans. "That was a long flight." 

"Long run for us." Carmen laughed a bit and then sat down, leaning her back up against a tree. I sat down next to her and Belle sat down next to me. 

I looked up at the sky and listened to the birds start to chirp all around us.  "I have never really realized, since I have been changed.. My senses have been extraordinary. I can hear sounds from far away, I can see things from a mile away.. I can sense safety and my surroundings."

Carmen smirked "Well I guess that's just the perks of being a vampire, am I right?" 

I nodded and Belle spread her wings and brushed them off. "There aren't really any perks to being a bird freak." 

"You're not a freak, your wings are absolutely beautiful... There has to be some perks right.. I mean for god sake you can fly. You can see the world from a different perspective.. I would change into a bird any day just to see what its like." I helped brush some dirt off of her wings and looked at her. 

"I guess flying is pretty cool, I have just been doing it for so long I'm just getting bored of it." 

Carmen shrugged. "I have been a vampire for 19 years Belle, how do you think I feel. Always going out to hunt, drinking the same blood everyday. Always fighting the same people.. It gets boring.. I want some real action.. This is the best thing that has happened to me since I got changed.." 

"I'm going to use the bathroom, I will be back guys." 

They nodded and I stood walking into the woods. I searched around for any sign of animal and I finally found a rabbit. I shot after it and jumped, causing it to land under me. I showed my fangs and dug my teeth into its furry little body. I felt horrible for doing that to a poor little rabbit, but it was the only food I have had for about a week. I sucked the blood through my teeth and smiled. The feeling was amazing. I let go of the bunny and pushed it off to the side, I grabbed a leaf and wiped the blood off my face and ran back to where Carmen and Belle were sitting. 

"What took you so long?" Carmen laughed. 

"Shut up, I also went to grab a bite to eat, I was starving." 

"What did you catch?" 

"Just a small rabbit, Not much.. But It filled me up somewhat." 

Carmen rubbed my back and looked up at the sky. "You will get better at hunting soon, don't worry." 

About an hour later we stood and began our journey once again. Finally we arrived at the airport in Orlando Florida. We walked inside and went straight to security. Belle looked around the place and looked worried, sweat was dripping down her face.

"You okay Belle?" 

She nodded "What if they catch us? I have never really done anything like this before.." 

Carmen let out a quiet laugh and walked even faster towards the security gates. She pushed through the line of people and got through security quickly. People started walking after her but she walked even faster. Belle and I followed close behind and we walked towards the plane boarding area. She walked past the flight attendant and walked onto the plane walking to the back and leading us into the plane bathroom. She shut the door and locked it waiting for the flight to take off. 

Carmen smiled "Time for an adventure.."
