Où Va La Chance

I woke, once again, from a nightmare, slowly.

It was early, too early and my sleeping schedule had reversed. I was up during nighttime and asleep during daytime.

I tried to not move and keep my breathing steady for I could hear Alice and Jasper talking to each other in the other room.

They spoke about the room she had seen, the one with a VCR. I got up and walked towards them.

They didn't look up at me as I walked in, Alice was sketching and they were both too busy on that to notice me.

"What is it?" I asked, grabbing water.

"She saw the room with the VCR again, but its light now." Jasper answered.

I walked behind the couch to take a peek and froze.

Alice drew a square room, with Edison bulbs hanging from the paneled ceiling. The floor was wooden, dark. On one side of the entrance there was a stone fireplace. The focus of the room was to the side, where there was an old, vintage TV attached to a VCR.

An aged sofa was next to it, the armrests were marked with dark brush strokes.

"Mom never forgave me for doing that to her vintage couch." I pointed.

Alice was already off the couch, the phone in hand. I stared at the picture, Jasper appeared at my side and put his hand over my shoulder and picked me up to sit me on the couch. His power seemed to work better when in physical touch.

Alice's lips moved faster now and though I could still hear her, I wasn't able to make out the actual words. I focused on breathing.

"Frankie," Alice called to me but I couldn't move, I couldn't bring my eyes to look up at her.

She sat next to me, caging my hand with both of hers. "Franks, Edward is coming to get you. He's gonna take you somewhere else, to hide you."

I couldn't speak correctly so I turned to her instead, nodding.

"He's catching the first flight out of Seattle. We'll meet him at the airport and you'll leave with him."

I tried to talk but realized I couldn't, "Alice bring me my inhaler."

Her eyes widened and she disappeared, coming back with it.

When I was done using it, I took a deep breath, "My mother?" My voice came out a squeak, the panic showing in my voice despite Jasper being there.

"Jasper and I will stay here to protect her." She smiled.

"You can't- I can't win! He's not tracking me, he's tracking everyone I love! I-"

Jasper held the inhaler up to me and took it.

"And what if you get hurt, Alice? Do you think that's okay with me? Do you think it's only my human family he can hurt me with?"

Alice looked meaningfully at Jasper. A deep, heavy fog of lethargy washed over me, and my eyes closed without my permission. My mind struggled against the fog, realizing what was happening. I forced my eyes open and stood up, stepping away from Jasper's hand.

"I don't want to go back to sleep," I snapped.

I walked to my room and shut the door, slammed it really, so I could be free to go to pieces privately. This time Alice didn't follow me. For three and a half hours I stared at the wall, curled in a ball, rocking. My mind went around in circles, trying to come up with some way out of this nightmare. There was no escape, no reprieve. I could see only one possible end looming darkly in my future. The only question was how many other people would be hurt before I reached it.
