Daisy had been attending cheer rehearsal after cheer rehearsal for what felt like forever. Louis used to attend most of them, and they would then walk home together and buy a portion of chips from the chippy near the school to share on the walk home, and it was lovely. Louis loved to see Daisy doing something that she loved, plus the uniform’s skirt was short and Louis wasn’t one to complain about details like that.

However, since things regarding Harry had turned things slightly tense between Louis and Daisy, he tended to avoid staying back to watch her practice and would instead walk home alone. Louis didn’t blame Daisy for the awkwardness, because if he was totally honest, if he had been hearing rumours about Daisy he would probably want some space too – but he did miss her.

When Daisy texted him that Saturday, once Louis had left Harry’s house, telling him that he was welcome to come to watch her cheer competition that was taking place after months and months of practice, he happily replied with:Oh cool, I’ll see you there! Good luck, love!!! You won’t need it though, you’re great xxxxx and headed home slightly quicker so that he could change and get a taxi to the venue that was about 45 minutes away.

The gymnasium was crazy. It was a country-wide competition and cheer squads from all across the UK had travelled to that one place. The noise was crazy, and the atmosphere intense and exciting, Louis had never really attended anything like that before he started dating Daisy, and none of her county competitions even compared to the intensity of this one.

The foyer was heaving with the families of the competitors, and there was a stall selling tiny flags in with the logo of each squad on it, and Louis bought one for Daisy’s team just for the novelty for it. As he was winding his way through the crowd he hooked his flag into the Topman rucksack he had brought to carry Daisy’s present in, and he used the opportunity of his unzipped bag to grab his phone and send Daisy an excited snapchat.

When he looked up and took into the gymnasium he saw the blue, green and white streamers hooked from corners to corners and the balloons that had been released floating around the ceiling, filling the sports hall with colour. He saw the small band set up in the corner playing Snow Patrol over the loudspeaker that no-one was really paying much attention to, but who he could tell were excited to be invited anyway – they looked young, he hoped they did well. He saw the refreshment stand in the opposite corner and the heaving mass of nervous parents clambering for final drinks with a panic and rush that resembled a toddler who had finally nailed how to run without falling over, and the straggling grandparents who had come along too, waiting a few steps back to retain their dignity.

He started trying to look for Daisy’s mum, because the last time that he went round Daisy’s house she had made Louis promise that he would look for her, but he was quickly ushered into a seat to avoid crowding in the gymnasium, but rather than causing trouble by getting up again, Louis just looked out into the sports hall, equipped with sprung flooring, and tried to pick out Daisy’s team out of the sea of excited teens.
