Chapter 1

(Erin's POV)

“So then, with a lovely sponsorship from the company, Aillington Industries, they finally had the money we needed to come to where we are now,” Mrs. Hampton explained to us, her 4th period Earth and early Space Society History class. Or she at least tried.

No one was particularly interested at all in the history of their frontier. It was interesting, yes. But Mrs. Hampton tended to speak in this dreadfully boring voice, that could even put a Earth snail to sleep. So boring.

I contentiously clicked the end of my pen and silently tuned her out. I looked like I was paying attention, but to be honest, I was pretty sure I was sleeping with my eyes open.

“Miss. Montgomery!” I snapped out of my trance to see an irritated Mrs. Hampton.

“Yes?” I asked with a sugary sweet voice. Mrs. Hampton peered at me over the top of her glasses. “Well, what's the answer Miss. Montgomery?”

“48?” I offered with a shrug.

Mrs. Hampton's lips were in a firm line as she stared me down before nodding and turning around towards the board. “Very good.”

Huh? I got that right? Sweet. When in doubt, always answer 48. Works like a charm, at least for me.

Someone elbowed me in the side and I looked at the source. My best friend, Jubilee Taylor, looked at me with her forest green eyes. “What?” I mouthed at her. She smirked and rolled her eyes at me. She leaned over and whispered into my ear, “Nice save.” I grinned at her before turning my attention back to the clicking of my pen.

I wish class would hurry up and end. I wanna eat lunch already! Plus this lecture is getting pretty boring. I mean, seriously, I think everyone knows how the frontiers in space came to exist. My brother and I knew at age 3 and still remembered to this very day. Speaking of Trevor, I wonder what he's doing right now. I know during 4th period he has space chemistry and biology with Mr. Shit. Okay, his name wasn't Mr. Shit, it mas Mr., uhhhh, I don't remember. I've been calling him that for so long, I don't even remember his real name. I guess it was a good thing I didn't have him this year. Or I would be screwed. Literally.

I nearly jumped and fell out of my seat at the sound of the bell ringing. LUNCH!

I got out of my seat and quickly smoothed out my black uniform skirt. I put my pen in my bag and swung it over my shoulder. I ran a hand through my caramel colored hair and looked at Jubilee and my other best friend, Mary Choi, who were both looking at my like I was crazy.

“What?” I asked.

“Someone wants to eat,” Mary replied with a small smile. I rolled my eyes at the statement. So not true.

Okay, it was. But that wasn't the only reason. “No, I just wanna get out of this shitty lecture and away from that bitch.”

“I'll see you in detention after school today, Miss. Montgomery.”

I flinched at Mrs. Hampton's voice. Forgot she was in the room.

I turned around to look at the woman I called my teacher. Hated her, so fucking much.

Mrs. Hampton has hated my brother and I from day one. She had us during two separate periods, but it was like having both us for one period. But why did she hate us with such a sheer passion? Good question.

Trevor and I never paid attention in class, never participated, and just sat there staring around the room aimlessly. She hated it even more that we both had straight A's in that class.
