I follow Link across the field of grass to the small sprout grinning at us.
"Link! And dear Navi! It's a treat to see you again." Navi squeaks a greeting in response. Link waves. "Have you been keeping busy?" Link shrugs and nods. "Well I am very glad to see you. And who is this?" The sprout asks, looking at me. Yes, it really is looking at me. I step forward and nod in respect. It is called 'Great' so it must be important.
"I'm Miira of the Gerudo," I introduce myself.
"You've finally come!" I jump back from its enthusiasm. It's shaking its twigs and grinning wildly. It's kind of freaking me out.
"Excuse me?" I ask carefully.
"We've been waiting for you! You must go to the Forest Temple immediately! It is of grave importance!"
"The Forest Temple? I thought I was going to the Lost Woods," I reply.
"The Forest Temple is in the Lost Woods," Navi explains to me.
"Okay, so, what am I supposed to do there?" I ask
"Link can take you there and tell you the way," the sprout says. "Hurry! You must hurry! They've been waiting for someone to help them rest for a very long time!"
"What? Who?" I ask, but the spout didn't seem to be in an explaining mood.
"Go! You must go now!"
"Okay, okay, I'm going!" I say, turning around and following Link back through the path and through the village and to a wall of vines. No one is explaining anything and it's starting to annoy me.
I follow the two up a vine wall, Link climbing impossibly slow. When I make it to the top, he guides me over to another one of those giant tree trunk entrances. I get a feeling of dread as I look at it. I'm probably going to have to go through a lot of those, aren't I? I walk up to the entrance and stare in. All I see is blackness. I hear rustling from Link and turn to look at him, he's holding out a map to me. I don't take it.
"What's this?" I ask, crossing my arms and leaning on one leg. Navi bounces around excitedly.
"This is a map! It'll show you the way to get to the Forest Temple!" Navi explains.
"I hate maps," I say, not wanting to admit that I wasn't sure how to read them. I was horrible with directions, and maps did nothing to help me.
"Okay, then you can just go in, then right, left, right, left, straight, left, and then right," Navi says quickly, still bouncing around.
"Left, right, left, left, right, left?" I ask.
"No! Right, left, right, left, straight, left, right!"
"Right, left, right, straight, right, left, right?" I try again.
Link steps forward and forces me to take the map, pointing out where we were standing on it. I look at it closer. It showed little squares with black circles on the sides. Some of the black circles looked like they connected to other squares, but there were some that didn't. Dead ends. I should be able to figure it out if they just lead to dead ends. Link points out the black circle at the top and Navi explains that it led to the Forest Temple, which wasn't actually shown on the map.
"Okay, I got it. You can go back to whatever it is you were supposed to be doing. Go save Hyrule or something," I tell him with a dismissive hand wave as I take the map and shove it into my pocket. I walk through the tunnel before he could say anything. Like he would actually say anything, I think to myself, rolling my eyes. He was probably mute. Hyrule's hero was mute. Or maybe he was dumb and couldn't think of anything himself. That's why he has that flying mouth with him.
