3. Can we avoid terror?

**Nick POV**

As we came outside, the sole survivor immediately crouched and I quickly took after, noting that there was something nearby.

Of course there had to be a hell of a lot of enemies out in the glowing sea, the festering rad crater was the perfect place for monsters to breed and grow undisturbed. At least until people like us came out into the stormy area and began shooting.

People like us... 'Nick, you're not a person' was the first thought that came to mind but I had to shake it off quickly before it got in the way of my senses and fighting ability. Thoughts like that always hindered me, but when I thought of (y/n)... Now that's another story.

"Nick, wait here," (y/n) said, then moved ahead.

I spoke to her as she snuck away. "Don't forget about me."

Watching her go was probably the worst, but if she had a plan concocted I wasn't going to interfere, I would just listen to her orders and trust that she'd direct me in the best way possible. That best way would be in a position that would protect her.

Slowly, she snuck back around and commanded me to follow her once more. "Thanks for coming back to me in one piece," I said.

She smiled. "Thanks for not exploding on me while I was gone."

I rolled my eyes, but couldn't help but allow a chuckle. "It was hard not to do, I promise you that much. Now, are we safe enough to get you out of this radiation?"

She nodded. "It seems the coast is clear, if you get what I mean."

"Ha, because it's a 'sea'. Aren't you a clever one?"

"You're supposed to be the clever one. You're a detective, I'm just supposed to make jokes and see if it makes everything better."

'You make things better just by being around,' I thought, but didn't dare voice the thought. She was a human, I was a synth. Why did it have to be this way? "It works for the most part, I'm sure you've noticed how excited Deacon gets."

"Oh god, don't even mention Deacon. Come on, let's fast travel to Sanctuary."

I smiled. "Whatever you want."
