Chapter 13: Relationship – April 18, 2021
With each passing date of Adrian and April, I became more and more sure of my feelings for her. She was the one; I was positive. Every time I was near her, I felt something huge in me, and this has been going on for too many years for it not to be love. It’s love. It is.
I love April Robinson.
This thing with Adrian has got to blow over anyway.
But there must be some part of me that doubts that because today, I’m finding myself at the door to her flat to make a move. To find my courage this time, before it’s definitely too late. I need to tell her that I’m in love with her. I need to tell her everything.
I’m at her door, but I don’t knock. I hear voices. I can’t tell her while Adrian is here.
It isn’t Adrian, though – it’s Caitlin.
Caitlin has visited April and I many times since we moved to London. Emma and Graham, too, but they’ve barely visited. Caitlin, however, is closer regarding both distance and friendship. Although, April’s been busy with Adrian lately that often Caitlin can only drop in to see me. I didn’t even know she was in town today though.
It’s kind of like I’m back in school. I hear Caitlin and April giggling like little girls again.
“Michael?” April says, but her voice is muffled.
“No way! He was kind of gross; I’d never like him,” Caitlin retorts in disgust. She’s always been louder so I have no problem hearing her.
“Harry?” April guesses. I like hearing her say my name.
It’s just getting interesting – I suppose they’re talking about old school crushes, and maybe April is trying to guess who Caitlin used to like. I remember Graham’s theory that she liked me, so I’m curious to hear what she’ll say.
“No, I’ve never fancied him either,” Caitlin says.
“That’s past tense…how about now?” April questions. I can just see her wiggling her perfect eyebrows playfully.
“That’s silly! Of course not,” Caitlin responds.
That hurts a little, I’ll admit, but I don’t believe it’s from her not liking me so much as her making it seem like I’m not even a consideration.
“Hmmm….” April thinks of another guess.
Their guessing game is not nearly as important as my message for April though. I need to knock, ask Caitlin to leave, and then tell April. And then we’ll see from there.
I raise my hand and rap on the wood three times.
Suddenly my heartbeat shoots up. The door is open. April is staring at me.
She smiles. “Harry! What a surprise to see you.” Then her beautiful face falls, just a bit. She looks concerned. “Is something the matter?”
“I have to tell you something,” I announce. I peer behind April. “Alone,” I add.
Caitlin looks worried too. “Harry, I’m going to go get a bite to eat and then I’ll go to your apartment to visit with you, okay?” She picks up her purse and rises from the couch.
“Fine,” I agree, although I don’t know how soon I’ll be there.
Caitlin struts out. She’s gotten tall.
“I have to tell you something,” I repeat to April once Caitlin has hurried away.
Her face falls farther. “What is it?”
