Chapter 1: Nikki

I bit my lip against the office chair. The lack of air conditioning made me a bit sweaty but not in the way that I should be in this situation. I was half asleep until my social services worker Maxine hit my shoulder with a magazine.

“Nikki, are you listening? You just sent a girl to the hospital. You blinded her and broke her wrist!”  She yelled at me. I cursed at myself. I was so mad at Adri. She ripped up the only photo I had of Noah, Jace, all my friends. I didn't realize what I've done until after I done it.

“I am, I'm so sorry. I didn't mean to take it that far.” I apologized.

“Something happened in Bronx, didn't it? You haven't been the same since you arrived. Is something wrong?”

“I found I had a sister, a half sister in Bronx. I met her and a made a lot of friends. Then one day while we were out, she was stabbed. Adri ripped up the only picture I had of her.” I held back tears, gripping my shorts. That was as close to the full truth as I could say. Once upon a time, I got taken to a magic academy. Once Upon a Time I made some friends. Once Upon A Time, I became a real life Harry Potter. Once Upon a Time, my sister died by her aunt.

“Oh. I understand. I lost someone close to your age. Nonetheless, this is your final warning Nikki. One more offense and I'll need to send you to another orphanage. Is that understood?” Maxine echoed. I just sat their and nodded. I got up and left the office.

I froze when I felt fur against my leg then realized it was Ran. Ran was my only friend at the orphanage and so happens to be Manx Cat with black and white fur. I meant him only 3 weeks ago. I scooped him up and walked back to my room. I left him to travel in my bed as I looked to find a brand new hand mirror on my desk.

No note, no tag, just a hand mirror. It was covered with Silver and covered with vines. Maybe it was my curiosity but I looked it at, it didn't show my reflection. It showed a maze, covered in tall mirrors. Then it showed me my sister Noah, alive with her mouth bloody, screaming for help. Then out of nowhere, the vines wrapped tightly around my arm. I struggled to get it off. Only when I smashed the reflective surface against the wall did it come off. It crashed, hitting my leg, causing several scars to mark my body, making Ran jump from fear.

“I'm alright Ran. Jesus, what the hell was that!” I exclaimed. Then out of nowhere this beautiful yet strangely evil voice came out of nowhere.

Go to The Maze….

It said scaring me half to death. My hand was bleeding but I was so lost in thought. Noah was alive, somewhere. I didn't understand. Noah died in front of me. How could she still be alive, more importantly how did whatever tried to kill me know I was here. I need to tell Aenar, Jace, somebody. I had to go back to Element City Academy.

Obviously I couldn't go back now cause Maxine would try to stop me and I would get nowhere so I waited until around 3 am, packing my stuff, including the mirror that attack me into my backpack. Ran came up to me.

“Reow?”

“Fine you can come with me, but you need to be quiet. Maxine can't know where we're going.”

“Too late for that Nikki.” Maxine exclaimed as she turned on the lights. “Did you really think I didn't expect you to go back to Element City?”

“How did you kn-”

“Aenar told me what you were the day he assigned me to you. However, the minute you leave Florida I won't be able to protect you. Amethyst may have been the one to start the war but there worse clans then her. I don't care what Aenar says, you don't have to go back.” Maxine sniffed. She may very well be the only parental figure in my life. Of course she'd want me to stay.
