Merlin's POV
***
"We need to take him back to Gwen!" Sir Leon says, Arthur was breathing but only faintly. I wipe my eye as I looked up at them all,"You heard him, it'll take us 5 days, it'll be too late," I say, giving up. Gwaine patted my shoulder,
"Not if we cut through the valley of the fallen King's, that will take two days off the journey! Come on, Merlin, it's not like you to give up," he says, I sigh. He's right. Maybe we could get him to Gwen in time. My heart is in pain, admitting that. I don't know why. It's not like Arthur loves me or anything.
"Ok," I take a deep breath, "lets go home,"
***
"We need to make shelter for the night, Gwaine," Sir Percival says, it was getting dark, and we were all tired from walking for so long. We all agreed and settled in for the night.
"Well, I've got to admit, that was a brave thing for Arthur to do," Gwaine says, when we eat dinner. I looked up at him, in confusion. What was brave about almost killing himself?!
"Merlin, to answer your question, he did it saving you, he wouldn't have done that if it were me," I shook my head,
"He cares about all his knights Gwaine, he would have done that for all of us," I argue, I heard Percival laugh,
"Not in the way he did for you," I looked at him. Are they mad?!
"What?!" I said, dumb struck. Percival and Gwaine shook their heads at the same time, whilst saying,
"Nothing,"
"You all get some rest, I'll keep watch," I say to them. I was in no mood for talking to them. I was also in no mood for sleeping. Screw that.
"Ok, thanks Merlin," the three said and they all turned in for the night. When I heard them snoring, I sat next to where Arthur was lying, his breath was getting worse, and so was the temperature of his forehead. I rummaged through my bag and found a flannel. I used some water from my drink and wiped Arthur's forehead with cool water, holding his hand,
"Come on Arthur, don't die on me," I whispered so only he could hear me. His head kept tossing and turning, I'm pretty sure his fever was getting worse.
"Mer-lin," he spoke in his sleep. I could feel a blush forming on my face. I held his hand tighter to let him know I was with him. I felt a very weak Arthur, tighten his grip. He was holding my hand as well. I sighed in relief, he's going to be ok. He just has to be.
I just wanted to kiss him, but I knew, if Arthur makes a recovery, the knights will know I kissed him. But if he still doesn't wake up, it'll break my heart. I wouldn't be able to work everyday knowing that, Arthur doesn't love me back.
"Merlin?" I heard Gwaine and I let go of Arthur's hand, I got up from my position, I wiped my eyes a little before facing him.
"Gwaine, how did you sleep," I say, he frowns at me,
"Perfectly, how much sleep did you get?" Damn, he must've known I didn't sleep. I looked down to the floor,
"None," he sighs, and gestures for me to sit down next to him. I don't think any of the knights were up yet, thank God.
"You must care for him a great deal," he says, well we we're whispering. I looked away,
"Yeah, he's my friend," and a dagger shoots into my heart. Friend. That's all we'll ever be. Just a stupid friend.
