Like usual, I start making breakfast. I have to do it, because Mom goes to work really early in the morning and she doesn't come home until right before me and Zero are dismissed from school. Today, though, is Saturday, so we don't have school today. Mom still has work, though. At least she's off on Sundays.
I grab the eggs out of the fridge and bring them to the counter, then get a pan and set it on the stove.
"So did you have fun out there?"I ask, hoping to get a conversation going. I turn on the burner.
"Oh, yeah! Me and Corey had a snowball fight! I had a snow rocket blasted in my face!"he giggled. I crack open a couple of eggs and watch them plop into the pan.
I chuckle and say,"That sounds like a lot of fun." I smile and listen to the sweet sizzle of the eggs.
"Mmmm...that smells good. Are they fried or scrambled today?"he asks.
"Today the eggs are scrambled."I plop the eggs into a bowl and scramble them with a beater. I put a little bit of pepper in the eggs to add to the flavor. I grab two plates, and split the eggs between them. I serve the eggs to Zero, and give him a fork.
"Dig in," I say as we both start eating.
"Wow! You can really taste the pepper!"he exclaims.
"Maybe next time, I'll add a little cheese to the mix." I say.
"Ooh! That sounds tasty!"
"I know, right?"
We finish eating, and I go put on my jacket and a pair of boots. Zero and I head outside and we both scoop up some snow with our hands and smack them together. Then we place the snowball on the ground. We pile more snow onto that snowball and within two minutes the snowball is up to my knee. We pile more snow onto it and it gets up to my torso. We stop piling and dig into the snow until we found a couple rocks. We place the rocks in a vertical line from the top, halfway down the pile, we save a couple rocks for later. We then take Zero's scarf and kinda wrap it on the top. The We pile more snow on it. Then Zero goes into the house and comes back out with a carrot. We stick the carrot into the extra snow and put the extra rocks around it to look like a face. We look at it a bit.
"He's missing something,"says Zero.
"You know what? I think you're right!"I say,"I just can't put my finger on it." We look at it a few seconds more.
"Arms!"Zero exclaims.Luckily there is a birch tree nearby. We snap off two twigs and stick them on the sides of the snow man. We're done! It's, not perfect, but at least we have something.
"Hey let's go walk on the bayou!" I say.
"Okay, but I'm afraid I might slip."says Zero.
"Well of course you're gonna slip, it's ice. Just let me give you a tip, if you walk flat-foot, it's less likely that you will slip."I say.
Zero and I approach the edge of the frozen bayou. I swing my arm out to stop Zero.
"Hold on, I have to make sure it's safe enough," I say. I stomp on the ice and it doesn't even crack. I smile and say,"We're good to go!" I step onto the ice and Zero follows me.
I twirl on the ice as if I am figure skating, but I end up slipping and falling. I just lie there for a few seconds. I sit up and say that I'm fine. Zero giggles a little bit. I start to laugh too, then a tsunami of laughter washes over us. It was golden! When we finish laughing, Zero says,"Come on! Let's go downstream a little bit!"I get up, and we follow the stream for about a minute. Then we hear a strange noise.
I stand still and whisper,"Hey Zero, can you hear that?"
Pop...pop pop...pop
"Yeah, what is that?"he asks.
SPLOOSH!!! Scream!
The ice under me gives in and I fall into the freezing bayou. I struggle to try to swim, but I'm panicking so much, that I can't. I'm sinking...fast. I am holding my breath, trying to put my energy into motion. I can't hold my breath much longer!I start to exhale slowly while trying to swim...it's too late. I inhale and stop moving. I sink into the bayou, lifeless. The shadows creep in as a slowly lose consciousness. Who would've thought I'd die this early?
