i began to write poetry
when i realized
exactly
what poetry was
poetry is not
rhyme schemes
iambic pentameter
or alliteration
poetry is not
exquisite word choice
intricate meanings
or melodic rhythms
poetry is
the blood in my veins
the pulse in my wrist
and the marrow in my bones
poetry is
the thoughts in my head,
the music in my heart
and a sliver of my soul
