Prologue

The phone rings creating a vibrating sound on the counter that hurts your ears like a giant gong being hit. The occupied men and women sitting around the massive table nearby make no move to pick it up as it cuts through the silence of the room. They simply ignore it and get back to the important documents on the table, stacked high and about to collapse. There was so much work to be done and they couldn't waste their time with insubstantial calls from salesmen and publicists. Not even family members or  work partners could distract them from this moment.

It was a breakthrough in everything they believed in. It was a diamond in a field of boulders, pebbles, and rubble. It was so unique and different not even science had an explanation. Not now at least but the group of significant leaders, scientists, and doctors were determined to explain the unexplained.

The phone finally stopped it's irritating ring and sat there like it wasn't just giving off the most annoying sound in the world. But right after it ended it started again, this time more piercing than the last.

"Can someone pick up that DAMN phone?!" shouted a booming voice that echoed around the room.

A small petite woman stood up immediately from her seat in the corner of the table and hurriedly made her way toward the obnoxious phone. "Meeting room 30A, how may I help you?" she replied into it.

A rough voice that could make you shudder like a cold breeze in the evening air made its way into the phone. "Yes this is Mr. Daniels, I need to talk to Dr. O'Connell about Experiment L," Mr. Daniels answered in a quick and pressing tone.

"I'm sorry sir but Dr. O'Connell is in a very important meeting right now for that exact experiment, but I'm sure you can talk to her after you've made an appointment," the woman said patiently.

"Please this is an urgent matter," he said through the phone a hint of agony in his voice.

"I'm sorry but I'm sure if you make an appointme..."

"No you don't understand," Mr. Daniels interrupted as he yelled in a desperate voice, "I need to talk to her now! Experiment L has escaped! I don't know how it happened, the camera footage didn't catch any mov..."

He never got to finish his sentence as the phone slipped from the woman's loose grip and landed on the floor with a loud thud, the extension cord bouncing it slightly into the air before it lay dead on the ground. Her face was a mixture of fear and panic. A rupture started to form in her stomach, quickly and painfully making it's way up her throat when it finally gave out and she burst.

"EXPERIMENT L HAS ESCAPED!" Her shout was so loud it could probably be heard over the sound of a speeding train on a rusted track.

Everyone's heads turned toward her as the burst was let out and her knees buckled giving way underneath her. The room erupted into a chorus of frightened and shocked voices mixed into one. A wild, chaotic environment rapidly overpowers the quiet, inquisitive one that was just there a few seconds ago. A total mess of things as the group in the room found out that their plans were ruined and their only means of a new generation has disappeared.

But through it all a tall woman stands in the very front of the room, her presence electrifying and her fiery red hair standing out in the dull colors of the room. Her black glasses rested on the bridge of her nose as she observed the scene around her, like a hawk watching it's prey and waiting for the perfect moment to attack. The moment she cleared her throat as a sign for attention the disorderly group took their seats without a further word.

"Now that that's over, Linda can you please tell us who was behind the phone?" she asked in a patient tone like the worse that can happen didn't just happen.

The small woman, Linda, came out of her daze, picked herself up, and cleared her throat. "Y-yes Dr. O'Connell, there was a um Mr. Daniels behind the phone and he said that Experiment L, the topic we were talking about right now, has... escaped." The words were small and dainty almost as if she wasn't sure herself what she was saying.

"Mr. Daniels? Are you sure?" Dr. O'Connell asked uncertainly.

"Yes that's what he said his name was."

"But that's not right," she breathed out, "he was sent on a mission to our labs in the Sossusvlei Dunes, he shouldn't be back till 2 months from now. Did he say why he was here or even if he was here?"

"No ma'am, the only information that was given was that Experiment L was gone and the camera footage never caught anything," Linda replied nervously fiddling with her thumb.

Dr. O'Connell looked deep in thought before she let out a deep breath she must've been holding in and replied calmly for all to hear, "This meeting is adjourned, we'll have to get back to it after we solve this little problem." She may have tried to keep a serene tone but her emerald green eyes gave way to her real emotions.

A stubby man in a polka dot tie and dark suit must have seen the worry written on her face and yelled out, "Little problem? Our whole plans have been ruined, how can you call that little?!"

Her face became firm and in a powerful voice she said, "We will get the experiment back and when we do we'll finish what we started, no matter how long it takes."
