"Checkmate." My voice came out soft, but filled with confidence. Alice clasped her hands together and smiled,

"Good game, Alina. I have to leave now. See you soon." She dissipated from my sight. I slowly sank into my plush sofa, unsatisfied with my win. As I sighed, my hand flew up to my head and ruffled my hair. Nothing is working! The fact that I found another way to beat Alice isn't thrilling. It felt like nothing. I've been searching for a cure for the numbness I always felt for years.

"Take me home," I muttered. My mind bent to my will and the world around me shifted. My imaginary room is spacious with minimal furniture, all decorated in pastels. I plopped myself down on my bed and pulled the thick, woolen blankets over my head. I'm bored. I'm bored of how empty everything is. I want entertainment.

"Books..." I commanded. Millions of books danced in front of my eyes, trying to catch my attention. I saw flashes of a bright red book, adorned with golden calligraphy on the spine. A thick book with a deep, navy blue color flew by my line of sight. I saw a book with a purple leather decorated with quotes from the story twirl out of my reach.

Reaching my hand out, I grabbed the nearest book. I glanced at the title and flipped to the last chapter I wrote. All I need is a quick recap to get the story flowing.

I began to imagine the setting of the story. The world shifted once again. I felt a cold liquid gently lapping against my skin. My body felt weightless, as if I've been immersed in water for hours. Slowly, my eyes opened. Bubbles escaped my lips as I let out a small gasp. I was under the glistening waves of the ocean. I could see the blue gradients ranging from a blue as dark as the night sky to a blue the color of ice. It was extraordinary. I moved my pen with a flourish, getting down every thought that flooded my mind.

Suddenly, the ocean began to disorientate. The clear water became murky. My body definitely wasn't weightless anymore . The soothing lapsing of the ocean started to fade away. "Alina!" A voice shouted, snapping me back to reality. I growled softly as the room melted back to its boring plain walls. My mom poked her head in and smiled,

"I want you to go on to this event with me. Maybe you can meet some new people sweetie." I held in my complaints. The quickest way to get my mother off my back is to agree. I forced myself to smile and sound cheerful as I chirped out,

"Sure!" Ugh, what was that childish voice I was using? It was so high pitched and immature. My mother grinned and left my room. Finally!

"Peace and quiet at last."
