Chapter 11: What's Real

My eyes flutter open to see the open blue sky framed with blurry trees. Suddenly a glassesed face pops into my field of vision, their pony tail hanging in my face and tickling my neck.

"You gotta stay awake (Y/N)" a female voice says worriedly.

My body won't respond to my commands and all I can do is blink in response.

I hear a sigh and a pressure on my body as I am picked up. My entire body screams in protest to the touch and all I can do is groan weakly.

My eyes open again to find myself laying in a stiff bed. Bandages cover my torso and I sit up slowly and look around the room "Where am I" I mumble with a croaking, misused voice.

I am in a small room occupied only by a dresser shoved in the corner, a bench against one wall and the bed I was lying in. A small lamp with a little flame inside it was perched atop the dresser lighting up the musty room with its flickering glow.

The door on the far side of the room slowly creaks open and the same glassesed face I had seen earlier peeks their head in and her eyes widen seeing me sitting up and looking at her seemingly fine.

"Your awake.." She mumbles walking into the room fully and crouching by the bed.

I nod.

"I'm so sorry" she cries flinging herself over my legs, making me wince at the sudden pressure.

"For what?' I ask confused as I gently rub her back comfortingly.

"I just wanted new subjects so bad..." she sniffs looking up at me "I almost got my second, my closest friend, killed..."

"I-It's ok Hanji... I'm still here aren't I?" I say soothingly shocked I knew the woman's name.

She sits up "Ya I guess" She sniffles hugging me "He-he what's going on here? I should be comforting you not the other way around" She says looking at me "But I guess that's just how it works with you huh" She giggles her hopes restored.

I laugh a little even though it hurt "How long have I been laying here? And where are we?" I ask tentatively not wanting to ruin the newly happy mood in the room.

"You've been out for 3 days" Hanji murmurs giving me a strange look "We are in the Survey Corps. Castle base... We are home..."

I walk into the white washed hospital room to find (Y/N) lying asleep on the bed in the center of the cubicle. It breaks my heart to see her like this, the strongest girl I know in a coma and relying on IVs to keep her alive. She is sickly pale, you wouldn't know she was alive accept for her regulated breathing and the beeping of the heart rate monitor.

I sit in a chair at the side of her bed and hold her hand between mine. I lower my head to touch the back of her hand. I look up at her face and kiss the back of her hand and place it back beside her on the bed.

Once I can't take seeing her like this any longer I stand and go to her bedside table and place her red glasses on the table and walk home.
