Sorry for the shortish chapter. I promise to give y'all a longer one next time :)

Axel's P.O.V.

It's been 3 days since we last saw or heard Melody. At this point, even Morbis was worried. The cabin we had found that night stunk like rotting flesh, but we stayed in it anyway. Peirce had the flu since yesterday after he came home from searching the woods all day. His constant puking wasn't helping the smell in the slightest.

We all searched for her, Every day. Fox had already lost hope and had been staying home with Peirce. If He wasn't sick, I would be suspicious about how little he talked lately. It's been a long time since I had seen anyone that sick.

Still, the way he looked at me, he seemed so guilty.

"Let's go out," Morbis said, grabbing his waterproof hiking boots that he'd been so excited about a few weeks back. At the time, they were a lighter color and a hell of a lot less muddy. "It's really nice out there right now, who knows what it will look like later." I agreed, grabbing my jacket.

We walked through the forest. It was orange mostly, with a few dark green pine trees. Although it was the coldest day we had since the Beginning, back in June, it was also the prettiest, despite the grim circumstances. I didn't know exactly what month it was, but I knew it had to be close to mid-October or November at the latest.

"Hey, " Morbis' hand landed on my shoulder, bringing me back to reality. He looked at me with pity. "I know we'll find her." How could someone be so confident? I was starting to feel so hopeless. I suppose he saw that in me too.

If I wasn't worried out of my damn mind, it would've been peaceful until Morbis pushed me against a tree, covering my mouth.

"Shhh," he slowly pulled his hand away and pointed to a girl. A small dead one laying against a tree. She was beautifully terrifying. There were a depressing amount of children that had turned. It used to make Fox cry. Eventually, we got used to them, but it was the most horrifying thing this new world had to offer. Three more dead walked out of the forest, One of which looked too familiar.

Our eyes met. My heart sank. My legs didn't work anymore. They saw us. They're eyes widened with hunger. Morbis looked at me.

"I'm sorry," he mouthed, springing into action. He killed them all, shooting them right in the head. I felt dizzy, staggering backward into another tree. "Hey!" Morbis grabbed my arm, swinging it over his shoulder. "I'm taking you home," I pushed him off, falling on the ground. He watched me crawl over to her. Tears filled my eyes.

"Not you too," My voice was scratchy, and high pitched as I began to cry. "Why!?." I shouted. The grey sky held no answers. Her face was pale, and untouched beside the rather large bullet wound in the center of her forehead. Her eyes were glazed over, and bloodshot. "I needed you," I whispered, laying my head on her chest. "I'm so sorry Mel."
