Immediately after David and I changed, we left the house for school. The drive seemed to drag on forever with an awkward tone added to the silence that had occurred. The air was tense and felt strange, making me feel like I should say something but I don't know what.
"So....how'd you sleep, I guess?" I ask hesitantly.
"Um, I slept fine. How did you sleep? I think you freaked out a little bit in the middle of night, but I could've been just dreaming it up."
I feel like I can trust David, so I tell him the truth. "Well, I had this nightmare where my mom came back and hit me and yelled at me, like she used to, and you and Dad were there."
"Oh. What.....what did your dad and I do in your dream?"
"You-" my throat tightens and struggle to choke the words out. "You and him were just standing there, doing nothing but watch."
Next thing I knew, we were parked on the side of the road and David was crossing the front of the car. He unbuckles my seatbelt and offers me his hand. I take it and he pulls me out onto the sidewalk. I feel his arms wrap around me and pull me to him. I curl my hands into fists against his chest and breathe his cologne in, relaxing and slowing my breathing.
"You're okay, okay?" David murmurs. "We will never just stand and watch. Not ever."
I slowly nod and my tears subside.
"You're okay," he repeats, almost to himself this time. He kisses the tip of my nose and walked me back to the car.
We continue driving, acting like nothing happened, singing along to the radio and laughing when one of us has a voice crack or just at the utter horribleness of our voices. We arrive at school, seemingly quicker than usual. Maybe because I was distracted the entire time.
