*claires pov*
"Surprise!" my family shouts and jumps out as soon as I walk in the door of my house, scaring me half to death.
"MA! I told you I hate surprise parties!" I say knowing she'd be the one to set it up yet I couldn't help but smile. With a quiet sigh I shake my head and look around at my family then at my mom who looks happier than normal, and is holding a blindfold.
"Wait, no!" before I can do more than that little shout of protest my brother pinned my arms behind my back and my mom tied the blindfold over my eyes.
"Mom!" I whine but she just shushes me.
"I want your birthday gift to be a surprise," she insists while leading me to the car.
Soon enough I feel the car pulling to a stop and I look around even though I have a blindfold on. My mom pulls off my blind fold and I find that I'm right in front of a pet store that sells hybrids.
"Really, you guy are buying me a neko?!" I exclaim in excitement. okay so maybe in 19 I still act like a child sometimes, in my defense I've wanted my own neko since I was 6. I rushed inside the building and looked around at the many cages holding all different sized and colored neko.
My brother went off to look at some cute female neko with tan fur, he says he hates animals but I see the way he looks at hybrids.
"Hello, my name is Jenna. is there a specific kind of neko you're looking for?" A worker asks me as she walked over. I look around the store thinking about it.
"Id like a female anything from 16 to 20 years old. Someone whos calmer and obedient. No special training." I add the last one because I know special trained neko cost twice as much as a normal neko.
Jenna nods and shows me to a few different cages around the store but none of them were really what I wanted. I zone out as Jenna talks about the current neko in the cage in front of us and notice a neko tucked away in a small cage. She was beautiful, bright red ears that contrasted with her waist length black hair. she had light blue, almost grey eyes that had seem too much pain in this world but there was still a spark of light in them. I noticed a light red color fill her cheeks when she realized I was staring right back at her and she looks away.
"What about that one?" I say as I walk over to her cage, my mother noticed me and walked over as well.
"oh, this is Rylie. Shes 17 years old and trained in basic obedience. she was just returned by her third master yesterday, something about her being unable to do basic things." Jenna says shaking her head.
The small girl looked up at us, or more me, as she heard us talking about her. When I looked into her eyes I saw her hiding fear and hope. what does she have to be afraid of, I'm the least menacing girl possible.
"Claire you don't want that one, look she's going to be put down in half an hour." my mother says pointing to a sheet on her cage. I heard a quiet, almost inaudible whimper from the small girl as she was reminded about her fate. The hope in her eyes vanished, replaced with little tears of fear as she curled up and hid her face under her tail.
"How about that one, she's adorable." my mom says walking to a cage not far away that's holding a girl with white ears. I just shook my head and tuned her out.
"Rylie..." I say her name softly, the only way I know she heard me is one of her ears swiveling back towards me. I cant help but reach into the cage and gently stroke her ear, feeling a small scar across the back of it which was hidden by her fur. She tenses when I touched her which just confused me more.
"I want this one." I saw to my mom and Jenna as I stand. Jenna nodded and went to get us the paperwork and my mom just sighs saying hoe I always had to save everyone. I smile softly and turn back to Rylie to see her grey blue eyes staring back at me. Despite the fact I'm adopting her, all I see is fear in her eyes. what happened to make her so afraid?
I sat in an office like room filling out the paperwork while Jenna went to prepare Rylie for me. Just as I was finishing, there was a timid knock on the door.
"come in." I say and I see Rylie walk in, her hair was braided and had a little red bow at the end. My eyes trailed down to her neck to see a black collar wrapped around it tightly, a red mark already forming from the fabric rubbing on her neck.
"Here," I say offering her a hand. She walked over to my side before sitting on the floor, refusing to look up at me. I reach around her neck and take off the collar, she immediately rubs her neck. I sigh softly and start petting her ears again, its silent for a moment before I could hear her quietly purring in my touch. I smile to myself as I finish the paperwork and my mom pays for her.
"Lets get you home, you look tired." I say to Rylie as she yawns adorably making me have to hold back an awe. I led her to my car and noticed her face pale once again. I can already tell she's going to need some serious TLC to get her to be comfortable around me.
"Come on Rylie," I coo at her and she sighs silently, hopping into the car and laying on the ground. I walk to the back and get in next to her, letting my parents drive back to my house. Rylie was gripping onto the floor of my car with a death grip even though it hadn't even started yet.
"Hop up on the seat Rylie." I tell her and she looks at me then the chair, hesitating. She slowly nodded and got onto the seat then I buckled her in.
"Youre going to love your new home." I tell her, almost missing her quiet reply.
"That's what they all say..."
