An hour later I'm sitting on a blanket with 3 others girls and Haruhi. The girls have been gossiping and boasting to a clearly annoyed Haruhi. I couldn't stop thinking about what happened at the pond. Did I come off too strong? If she says no, how do I cover it up? Would she believe me if I did? Could we ever be friends after this? I don't know why but I have the worst guilty feeling.
Haruhi glances at me while the girls talk at her. She smiles.
Is she trying to cover up what happened? I was afraid this would happen. My stomach sinks as I try to do my most genuine smile back. Or maybe she likes me and is trying to subtly convey it to me? I can hope at the very least.
"How is your afternoon going, (y/n)?" Haruhi loudly asks, trying to talk over the other girls.
"Urmm..." I rub my face in embarrassment as the girls look at me in a jealous rage, "good...?"
"Not very talkative today, are you?" Her smile fades as she realizes how uncomfortable and awkward I'm being.
"Oh COME ON!" One of the girls stands up, "You talk to her ALL the time! Give us a chance to know you for once!"
Haruhi's eyes widen and she stands up next to the girl. She puts her hand on her shoulder. "P-please calm down ci-"
"How about YOU calm down?!" She smacks Haruhi's hand. "My father will hear about this inequality! This...this...this RACISM!"
"OK HOLD THE PHONE! WHAT!?!" Haruhi shouted, "WHAT THE HELL DO YOU MEAN?!"
"SEE LOOK AT YOU NOW! ABUSING A WOMAN HOW DAAAAARRE YOU!!" She storms off and pulls out her phone. The other girls follow her.
"Hello 911? Yes, well, I've just been harras-" She is interrupted by Kyoya taking the phone out of her hand.
"Hey!? What do you think you're doing?!"
He ends the call and puts the phone in his pocket. "We can't have Haruhi be expelled for false allegations of a terrible crime. Get out of here or I will have to use force to get you out."
Infuriated, the girls stomp to their limo and drive away.
Silence. Kyoya jots something down on his clipboard, then walks off.
"Welp," Haruhi sits back down. "That was...stressful."
"Yeah..." All words escape me in this situation. What do I do?! My heart pounds as Haruhi scoots closer to me.
"So about earlier," Haruhi looks down. "I...I don't know."
My voice gets caught in my throat. Don't know? What does that mean? The voices in my head are racing to find an answer.
"Don't know...?" I ask.
"Well," Haruhi stammers. Her face grows red. "Do you like me?"
My eyes widen. She flipped the question onto me! Is this just gonna be a back and forth until one of us says yes? Should I take the initiative?
"Um..." What do I have to lose? I take a deep breath. "Yes. I do." I hear my pulse grow louder. My hands grow clammy.
Haruhi sighs in relief. "Oh thank Jesus." She lets out a huge breath. "I do too but I don't know how to say it and I really took a gamble when I leaned my head on your shoulder and-"
I grab her arm. "Calm down." I smile at her. "You did great."
I pull her into a warm embrace. We linger there for a while.
We spend the rest of the evening eating sandwiches, toffees, and drinking tea. Surprisingly no one else requested Haruhi the whole day. The story of those girls must've gotten around. I still feel off, even after the confession. I mean, are we a couple? Does she want to be a couple with her current role in the host club? Would we have to hide it? Haruhi notices my concern.
"What's wrong?" She asked, gathering our plates and silverware. The sun had set before we knew it.
"I was thinking..."
"You were? That's new." She grins at me.
"Ha ha funny joke. But still," I grab our napkins and teacups and stand. "are we...ya know..." I lean in. "a couple?
"If you want to."
"Hell freaking yes." We giggle and hand the dishes to the assistants."But," Haruhi interjects, "We'll have to keep it secret. You see how those girls can get. Even I'm scared of them."
"Fine by me"
