[ The Delinquents ]
prologue: first day
➳ Alaska
My heels clicked as I walked down the new corridor of my new school. My story was that I 'transferred' from my old school to this one, when I was really escorted out. As I walked into the school, I was warned by a couple of juniors to stay away from Luke Hemmings, the school bad boy. I laughed, continuing to walk into the building.
People would tend to see me as the preppy girl innocent type by a glance, but you were far from innocent "Are you the new girl?" a voice questioned, his voice slightly intimidating. "That depends who's asking" I sassed, closing my locker door, revealing a blonde haired boy. "Luke Hemmings" he responded, looking up into your eyes. “Oh, so you’re the one I’m supposed to be oh so cautious of" I chuckled, biting back a smile. "That depends who wants to know" he joked, repeating my words from moments before. "Alaska" I said, smirking back at him.
"Is there a place around here I could spark up, before I have to head to class?" I asked, turning around to face him. He knitted his brows together, his lips turning up into a smirk. "Follow me." he said grabbing my hand and walking me out the building. People stared at both of us, I shrugged… “Why are people staring?” I asked Luke, looking around at the people in the courtyard. Luke shrugged, continuing to walk with his hand gripped firmly around your wrist.
Luke pulled me around the back of the school. He let go of my wrist, pulling a pack of cigarettes out of his pocket. He patted down his pockets, feeling around for something "Mind if i borrow your lighter? I forgot mine” he huffed, the cigarette placed between his lips. I smiled and lit both of our cigarettes together. "So I guess you’re not a precious little daddy’s girl" he said, smoke escaping his lips. "Guess you’re some sort of pretentious asshole" I shot back, a small chuckle escaping my lips as I leant against the wall, pulling the cigarette from my lips. “Good judge of character I see” he smiled, moving closer to you.
“So what’s your deal? I mean new girls tend to be really uptight... Especially ones that dress the way you do. What’s with that anyway” he snickered, gesturing to my dress and pumps. I chuckled, “Just really didn’t fit in at my old school I guess, I mean you’ve probably heard that I just transferred, but if I get to know you better maybe I might share some of my secrets with you. As for my clothes… giving off the ‘good girl’ vibe was my mums idea, she thought it wouldn’t attract trouble… guess she couldn’t really do anything about me personally” I looked at him, placing my cigarette between my lips again. He laughed softly, as he sat down leaning against the brick wall.
“What about you, what’s your deal?” I asked, emphasising on the word ‘your’. “Rough childhood, I mean I can’t complain as much as others but dad’s girlfriend is really driving me up the fucking wall” he groaned, a smile tugging on my lips. He shrugged, looking out over the car park. “I’m only staying with him because mum kicked my ass out until I work on being a better person” he added, before turning back to look at me. I didn’t say anything, I just nodded.
“Wow that’s deep Hemmings, you truly are a character” I commented, letting out a small laugh. “You know, it’s your first day and you’re late to class.” He pointed out, looking at his phone. “Shit, and to think I promised to be good on my first day” I huffed, scanning over my timetable for my first period. “It should be in the top right hand corner” he said, putting his cigarette out. I stood up, taking one final puff of my cigarette before throwing it on the ground, stepping on it.
I found that I had art first period, a class I had just discovered both Luke and I shared. We both walked in slowly, the teacher turning around as the door opened. “Ah Hemmings, late again as usual” she laughed, walking over to Luke and I “Yeah I know but I was with her” he replied, stepping over to reveal me standing behind him. “Go sit down Hemmings” she said as she rolled her eyes. Luke walked away, taking a seat in the classroom.
“I’m Miss Brown and you’re new I take it” she said, walking closer to me. “Yeah, I’m Alaska” I answered as I shifted my weight from foot to foot. She chuckled, looking down at you. “Take a seat next to Mr Hemmings, since you seem to know him” she smirked, placing her hand on my back and ushered me over to the free seat.
That day I met Luke Hemmings, it was definitely a day I would remember. Despite Luke being seen as the ‘bad boy’... he was definitely something else, I was determined to break down those walls he built so high.
