chapter 1: hit and run

➳ Alaska

After surviving my first week at school, without any disturbances I’d become really good friends with the blonde haired boy who I instantly took a liking to on my first day, particularly because I was warned he was dangerous, and I was never one to take advice.

My style changed, I’d become more myself with him rather than putting an act out and trying to be someone I wasn’t. I sat at the park waiting for Luke who asked me to meet him there. I took out a cigarette, sparking it up and bringing it to my lips. "Dammit Luke where are you" I muttered to myself, looking around but he was nowhere to be seen.

"Boo" I heard someone whisper into my ear, I instinctively turned around and connected my fist with their cheek. I turned around to see Luke standing there, wincing in pain as I had just punched him in the face. I quickly chucked my cigarette to the ground, stomping on it and rushed over to his side.

"Jesus Christ Luke, fucking don't do that" I scolded him, feeling bad for hitting him. "Jesus, how hard do you hit" he whined, sitting down on a seat nearby. "Well, I did learn how to protect myself" I shrugged, lifting his chin up with my finger. "Ow, don't touch it!" Luke complained, swatting my hand away with his, causing me to let out a soft chuckle. "Let me look at it, you loser" I groaned, moving his hand out of the way. His cheek was red, and it looked like it was bruising.

"Looks like we're going to have to cover that up" I smirked, rummaging through my bag and pulling out a compact. "Ugh, can't i just leave it?" he grunted, causing you to laugh. "Yeah sure, unless you want to tell everyone you got hit by a girl and that's why you have a bruise on your cheek" I countered, causing him to frown. "Fine, only because I don’t want to look like a dickhead, because you can hit harder than me" he said, finally giving in.

I covered his bruise with my makeup, making his face look like it had never been touched. "There you go" I said passing him a mirror to check his face. "Jesus, i will never understand makeup" he chuckled, moving over on the seat so I could sit down next to him.

"So, because you hit me does that mean you're willing to do something in return?" he asked, wiggling his eyebrows. My eyes widened, hoping he didn't mean what I assumed he did. "Oh god, not like that Alaska I just wanted to take you on a date dammit, at least let me take you out on a date first" he chuckled, placing his hand on mine. "Fine, one date couldn't hurt I guess" you smiled, placing a small peck on his cheek.

“If it’s lame then I’m leaving” I teased, while you sat with Luke at a deserted park. “You’ll have to wait and see” he smirked, getting up. He extended his hand out to me, as I grabbed it he squeezed it tightly, pulling me up. “Let’s get out of here, we look like paedophiles” he laughed, letting go of my hand and placing it back into the pocket of his skinny jeans.

Luke and I walked around town; he showed me the best spots around as I wasn’t fully acquainted with the areas just yet. “This is my favourite place” he said, pushing the door open. He led me into the empty café, the waitress walking up and hugging Luke. “Luke sweetheart, it’s been a while since you came here” she said, pulling out of the embrace. “Mum… this is Alaska” Luke said, gesturing towards me as he grabbed my hand and pulled you forward. “Luke talks a lot about you, nice to finally put a name to a face” she smiled, pulling me towards her into a warm hug.

Luke spoke about his mum often, like she was someone who he really cared about. Luke looked slightly like his mother; they had the same shade of blonde hair and the piercing blue eyes. “Nice to meet you too Mrs Hemmings” I smiled nervously, as she let go of me. “Please, call me Liz… Mrs Hemmings makes me feel so old” she chuckled, walking back behind the counter. “So what do you want to eat guys?” She asked, passing us the menus that were just out of our reach.

“What if we just get a bowl of chips and share?” Luke asked, turning to me. “Yeah that’s fine with me” I smiled, spinning around on the stool at the bar. “You’re a dork you know” he chuckled, spinning me around some more with his foot. “Says the one who’s spinning me now” I pointed out, causing him to smile. “Shut up” he groaned, pulling his foot back under his stool.

“I’ll be back in two seconds, I need to piss” he groaned, getting up and walking out. I was oddly comfortable around Luke, after knowing him for just one week. It seemed as if Luke was a whole entirely different person with me then the person everyone made him out to be. “He’s been a lot happier lately” His mum said walking in, placing the chips on the counter. “Yeah? I’m glad” I smiled, poking my fork in the food. “Still can’t get him to give up smoking though, it’s going to kill him one day” she sighed, looking up at me. “It’s probably just stress, I smoke when I’m stressed or nervous” I pointed out, trying to comfort her. “You think so? I have realised that he hasn’t been smoking that much to be honest, since he moved back in” she confessed.

“You know Alaska, I’m really glad Luke met you” she said, her lips curving up into a smile. “He needs someone who’s exactly like him” she continued. “I’m glad we’re friends, he’s a lovely person” I replied, returning the smile. She nodded and walked back into the kitchen, Luke walking back into the room.
