"They abandoned you?" My mother asks calmly. She nods, flushing bright pink. She picks up the phone and dials someone. "I have to report them to the police." She says, hitting the call button. Blue stares at her feet, uncomfortable. I pull Blue out of the room so she doesn't have to listen to that conversation. We head up to the loft, and I hand her a book I think she might like. She smiles at me and sits down on the floor, already lost in the book. I find an old magazine, and I lay down next to her to read. After a few minutes, my mother calls us back downstairs. We get up, and I put the book and magazine in a pile where we were reading. We go downstairs, and my mother hugs Blue. "Your parents are on their way to jail." She says, smiling brightly. "Do you have custody over me?" She asks softly, worry lining her face. "Yep! Just a few papers I need to sign, and I'm sure my husband will sign them as well." She says, pulling me into the hug. I smile, and hug back. Just then, my father walks in. "Oh, what do we have here?" He asks, then smothering all of us in a hug. "Dad, mom needs you to sign some papers." I tell him, barely able to breathe. My mother and father exit the room, whispering to each other quietly. "I hug Blue. "Your safe now." I whisper in her ear. She hugs back tightly, and then she lets go. Someone knocks on the front door. I go and check who it is, and it's the group of girls from the mall. 'How did they find my house!!' I scream internally. I open the door a crack. "Go away." I say, and then I slam the door and I lock it. They go over to a window and start tapping it. "Blue, will you go upstairs?" I ask sweetly. She nods, then she runs upstairs like there's no tomorrow. I open the window they were tapping on, and I look at them. "What do you want?" I ask, trying to keep the anger off of my mace. "We want you to join us, and leave the little 'FREAK' behind." She sneers at me. "No can do." I say, then I slam the window shut, and I lock it. I go to all of the windows in the house and I lock them. I go to Blue, who was hiding her face. "Emerald?" She asks, raising her head. "Yes?" I ask, forcing a smile. "W-who were those girls?" She asks, a concerned note in her voice. "Just some high kids" i say, feeling slightly guilty for lying. "What did they want?" She presses, hugging my knees. "They wanted me to leave you to go smoke pot." I say truthfully. "Oh..." She sighs, looking relieved. She releases my knees, sits Indian-style, picks up her book, and starts reading again. I lay down in front of her, I press my back against her legs, and I fall asleep.
