Sam stared between Cas and I, looking back and forth. He couldn't believe it. I don't think Dean could either, but he contained it.

"How is it possible that you're her father, Cas?" Sam looked like he'd just seen a ghost.

Well.

Maybe not.

"Back in 1997, I went off the grid," Cas explained. "It was the first time I'd rebelled. I wanted to experience what it was like to be a human for once."

I stared at the angel in front of me. He looked at me. His eyes were boring into me. His eyes began to show compassion and... Love.

"The first person I met was Amelia Dawson, your mother," his eyes started to sparkle. "She took me in while I was running from my brothers and sisters. Emerson, she was the most beautiful human being I had ever seen. She was kind, and beautiful, and she was so selfless... She knew how much danger I put her in, but she didn't care. She loved me. And I loved her."

I didn't realize it, but there were tears streaming down my face.

Castiel continued. "When you were conceived... Your mother... She was so scared. I didn't want her to get hurt. She meant everything to me. I stayed with her during the nine months before you were born. Once you were born, though, I knew I couldn't pull you into that danger. I had to leave. I knew the consequences of going back to Heaven, but I was willing to face them. It took everything within me to leave you and Amelia, but I knew it was the right thing. And last night when Sam and Dean and I found you outside last night..." He trailed off, shaking his head. "I knew your abilities had started."

"What abilities?" I asked in unison with the brothers. I wiped the tears from my face.

"Emerson, you're half angel," my father said darkly. "You're not fully human, but you're not fully angel, and you are far more powerful than both."

I froze.

Half angel.

I mean, it made sense. Castiel was an angel and my mother was human. But... I had abilities?

"What kinds of abilities, Cas?" Dean stepped in, reading my mind and saying the words I couldn't manage to get out.

"Angelic abilities," Cas looked at me. "You'll have to learn to control them, Emerson. You're highly dangerous to everyone you meet."

"Is that how I got from Salem to here?" I asked quietly.

Cas nodded gravely. "Your other abilities will start to show up soon. We need to get you to a safe place as soon as possible."

"What about my mom?" I was worried. If I wasn't safe neither was she.

"I'll go get her," was all I heard, and then he was gone.

"Come on, we'll get going," Dean pulled me up out of my trance.

I looked at my feet. "Shit," I said, realizing I had no shoes.

"Here," Dean dug through the bag he had slung over his shoulder. He brought out a pair of black socks and handed them to me.

"Thanks," I put the socks on.

"Are we ready to go?" Sam came out of the bathroom carrying two duffel bags filled with God knows what.

"Yeah," Dean said, and I nodded.

"Okay, let's go."

I picked up a small backpack, slinging it over my shoulder. It was  surprisingly heavy.

We left the hotel room. Dean put his hand on the small of my back, leading me to the most beautiful car I'd ever seen.

"Damn," I breathed.

"Isn't she a piece of work?" Dean asked smugly.

"Can I drive?" I asked, just to amuse myself.

Sam gave Dean a look, and the older brother pouted tossing me the keys. "Just don't hurt her, okay?"

I laughed, getting in the driver's seat. Sam sat in the back, and Dean sat up front with me. I pulled the old Impala out of the parking lot, and followed Dean's directions to the highway.

Dean popped in a tape and Kansas started blasting over the speakers. I sang along with the music, and Dean as well.

'Carry on my wayward son, there'll be peace when you are done. Lay your weary head to rest, don't you cry no more.'
