Dear Mother,
How are you doing? Is the farm doing well? I am sorry for not writing a letter sooner. The price of paper is getting more expensive. Do not worry, Chimlin and Chailai are doing well in school. They are very intelligent and bright students and have managed to get along with their classmates.
I have found a job as a street vendor. I sell pad thai, tom yum and some drinks. There are people who like the food I cook so they come back for more. My business is doing well. But that is not the case for others, there are some people who shut down their stalls because of lack of customers.
Many of us in the village thought moving to Bangkok or a city would make life easier. However, that is not the case. Please tell the other villagers to remain in the village. It's much better. Who knew living in the city would require a large sum of money.
When you move into Bangkok, the first thing to do is to find a home to live. As the rent is expensive, we could not live in a proper home. We are currently living in a slum.
The environment in slums is not very hygienic as there are many pests, litter and dirt. It is very easy to catch a disease. When someone catches a disease, the disease spreads to other people. If the disease is life threatening, many people would die. The so-called houses built are not stable. They are unable to withstand a typhoon. The reason is because these "houses" built are made of materials such as wood that can catch fire easily. They are also built very closely together. So when a "house" catches fire, the other surrounding "houses" get affected too.
The water is not very clean either. We cannot always buy clean drinking water from shops as we need money for other necessities. So we make do with the dirty water. I even heard some people have died from drinking dirty water. I think it is a just rumor but it is very scary.
Not only that, there are also officers that tell us to move out as they want to use the land to build buildings. If we do not follow their instructions, they would force us to move out. But, how can they do that? We do not have any other place to go. Yes, they have a higher social status. But that does not mean they have the right to push their weight around.
I heard from some neighbours that there would a self-help scheme going on in future. In the programme, we would be provided with materials to construct our own houses. The programme seems promising. I would keep you up to the date with the details. I hope to see you soon.
Love,
Dao
