There was a winter ball that night. Most boring thing I have ever been too. My sisters were having the time of their lives, talking with soldier from the war, but I found no one of interest. Until I saw him.

John Laurens. An American soldier. He had a curly brown ponytail with pale freckled skin. He was handsome and looked no older than me.

"So, you're a Schuyler?" He asked me.

"Yeah." I said. "It's not all the luxury you would expect."

"Oh?" He lead me around the dance floor, dancing around other people.

"My dad is a bit controlling. He says no to everything. Not that I care."

He smiled his beautiful smile at me. " I would give anything to have your life."

"Really?" I asked "I would much rather fight in a war than clean laundry."

"The maybe we should switch places." He joked.

I laughed. "I wish.

He and I talked the night away. That is until I was swept away by my sisters to meet him.
