The rain hit Richies window as he stared out of it to the road ahead. He liked rain but he didn't like that it was putting a stop to seeing his friends. It wasn't the hardest thing for him to admit but he didn't like his family very much. His mom was loud and didn't acknowledge him what so ever. While his dad was quiet and the only time he said anything was a demand for another drink to his mother.

Needless to say, his mother complained.

So, Richie was sat quietly in his room, messing with the bottom of his window sill and his chin sat on the desk in front of it. His room was cozy. It's walls were a soft blue that helped him stay calm, though he'd never admit that was the only reason he'd painted them that way. The trim was white, making the whole room look a little softer. He liked it but pretended to complain when friends were over.

"Yeah, my mom painted it like this because it was leftover from painting the bathroom and she didn't want to buy more paint. It's totally fucking girly. I wish it was black or something, that'd be bad ass" He would say in his loud voice.

Every word was a lie.

He didn't know what he'd do without his room, his get away from everything.

Eddie saw right through when he said that.

Eddie.

That boy made Richie feel like he did when he was in his room.

Calm

Eddie was his rock outside of his room.

And just like his room, he'd never admit that to anyone.

He used to come over every weekend. The two would play games and just be kids for a while.

He wasn't sure when that stopped. He missed it. Maybe more than he should. A sigh escaped him as he sat up and stretched. Thinking wasn't the best thing for him now.

He stood up and took a deep breath. Now his mind was on one thing.

Eddie Fucking Kaspbrak.

He pushed his glasses up on his nose as he noticed the rain had stopped falling.

"I know you like it in here" He remembered a conversation with Eddie. Eddie had on a pink polo that day, the shirt Richie had learned was one of Eddies favorites.

"In my room?"

"Yeah" Eddie had answered and looked over at Richie, both of them laid out on the loud mouthed boys bed. Richie scoffed and a smile landed on his face.

"Whatever, it doesn't matter if I like it in here or not" He had muttered, ending the conversation. He'd gotten deep with Eddie a few times, enough for Eddie to know about his mom and dad but not enough for him to know just how lonely everything made him feel. He'd see his friends laughing and being happy and he wanted to know what that felt like. What genuine happiness felt like.

He figured he'd never really feel it.

Richie shook his head as if something had landed on it before he pushed his glasses up once more and pulled on his shoes.

Maybe someone would be at the Quarry.

And if not, oh well.

He trotted through his house, grabbing a few things before strolling outside and getting on his bike. His mind wandered to the young Kaspbrak once more. That little germaphobe boy he'd known since as long as he could remember. In Richies opinion, they'd always been friends.  He remembered a time that he'd fallen off his bike when he'd first learned to ride and Eddie ran over with one hand already shoved into that dumb Fanny pack on his hip. He rambled on and on about how unsanitary the ground was as he'd clad Richies knee with the brightest neon band aids he'd ever seen. Sure, at the time Richie had rolled his eyes and called him some name but now he couldn't help but smile.

He didn't realize until he was looking over into the water that he'd gotten to the quarry. He had stopped his bike and thrown it to the ground, sitting with his feet over the edge of the only land keeping him from the water. He came here to think but he knew Eddie did too. He'd ran into him once before.

"Oh, uh, Hey Ed's" Richie had said as he walked to the ledge with his hands in his pockets. Eddie looked up at him and gave a soft smile that didn't go to his eyes like they usually did. Richie couldn't help but wonder how Eddie had such an absolutely great smile but he never said a word.

"Hey, Rich" He'd said back before looking back over the water. Richie plopped next to him, closer than when they were with friends. They always sat closer when it was just the two of them, their arms brushing together and their knees pressed against the others. After a few moments of silence, Eddies head laid gently on Richie shoulder and their hands linked together. Richie was sure his face was the color of one of his old fire engine toys but he didn't pull away. He leaned his head on Eddies and they just sat there, enjoying each other's company.

"Hey, Richie" Eddies voice drew Richie out of his memory and he turned around quickly to see the small boy with a sheepish smile on his face.

"Hey, Ed's" Richie muttered, his eyes going to the ground next to him before he turned back to look at the water. Just like Richie had those few months ago, Eddies plopped down next to him.

"You okay?" Eddie asked and Richie blinked as if the question didn't register. Was he okay? He honestly didn't know...

"I'm not sure...Okay is sort of over rated, everybody's sad now" Richie joked half heartedly. Eddie still chuckled. Richie still appreciated it.

"I...I came out here to find you...I saw that you weren't at home and I got kind of worried" Eddie said and waved his legs lightly over the edge of the Quarry.

"No need to worry about me, Ed's..." Richie said and pushed his hair out of his face. Anyone being concerned about him was very new.

"I wanted to say something but I...do you want to hear it?" Eddie asked and nervously chewed at the inside of his lip.

Richie had noticed him do that a few times before, it always meant he was anxious.

"Yeah, of course I do..." Richie said as his eyes chased the ripples in the water below.

"I've...I guess I figured it out a long time ago...maybe not a long time but a few months" Eddie began before taking a deep breath and exhaling quietly.

"You mean a lot to me, Richie...more than you know..." Eddie muttered and Richies eyes landed on the smaller boys legs. They'd stopped swinging.

"A-And I just wanted you to know because all of us have been noticing that you haven't really been yourself lately..." Eddie muttered and Richies eyes traveled up further. Eddies hands were fidgeting with his Fanny pack, zipping and unzipping quietly as if not to disturb Richies thoughts. A smile tugged at Richies lips.

"I know home life is hard for you and it must be especially hard since it's summer and you aren't able to get away all day at school and stuff...but you can always come to my place if you need" Eddie said and Richies eyes finally traveled to Eddies face. His gaze was at one point across the way, still chewing at the inside of his lip as he mumbled out his words.

"Ed's...can I do something kind of risky?" Richie asked and Eddie looked at him, looking over the other in a frantic fashion.

"Richie, I fucking swear to god if you jump into that water I'll k-" Richie cut Eddie off when his lips pressed against the others. To say that Eddie was star struck would be an understatement. It took a few moments before he melted into the kiss and leaned in a bit. It was quick and it was innocent, it was each of their first kiss, but both of them didn't want to pull away. Richie kept his eyes closed for a moment after he'd pulled away, feeling like his world had paused.

Then he heard the sound of an inhaler cap. A smile grew on his lips as he opened his eyes to see Eddies face completely red and the inhaler pressed between his lips as he sucked in the air.

"I didn't expect you to go and die over little old me" Richie joked and Eddie pressed the inhalers trigger once more, looking over at Richie with a smile as large as his.

"Fuck you, Trashmouth" He'd said before leaning in and kissing him again.

Maybe Richie would know what that genuine happiness was.

Because this was damn close.
