FOUR YEARS EARLIER

(Melanie's POV)

I held the stick in my hand. I had to tell Louis today. I had put it off for about a week. He deserved to know. He was the father of my, our, son or daughter. I still couldn't yet wrap my mind around that.

About a month ago, Louis and I went to a party and got drunk out of our minds. The next thing I know, I'm waking up at his place, naked alongside him. We didn't talk for about a week after.

I thought we would just put it in the past. I thought we could put it in the past. But when I was two weeks late for my period, I began to think otherwise.

First, I panicked. Then, I called up my best friend Jess. She drove over with three pregnancy tests, a carton of cotton candy ice cream, and all 10 seasons of Friends on DVD. I did my thing and each one bared a tiny plus. Then, we cried. When my mom came home, she left, and I cried some more.

I saw Louis a few days after that, and it was so hard to try and tell him. I felt like it was my fault, and the guilt was eating me alive. Gnawing and nibbling on my heart, knowing I was going to tie him down like this. We may not have been dating, but I did love him.

A tiny person is growing inside my stomach right now. How is that even comprehensible. I have a nine month road ahead of me. With or without Louis. How do I deal with this? What if he doesn't want it? I would have to take care of him/ her all by myself! Oh my god, my parents are going to kill me! How the heck do people keep their shit during this?

He had told me he was going to come over to share some "exciting news." I didn't exactly tell him I had news, but I knew I had to tell him.

I racked my brain trying to come up with news he could share with me. I pretty much knew already, his band, One Direction, was pretty popular. No doubt it was about that.

A knock on the door distracted me from my doubts. I collected myself enough to walk over to the door, revealing a beautiful boy with captivating blue eyes.

"Hey Mel," he said, walking in.

"Hey Lou," I said, closing the door. I wasn't exactly sure if my voice cracked, but he didn't seem to notice.

"Okay, I have the greatest news of all time, ever," he said.

"I have news, too," I whispered, him not hearing me.

"Okay, I guess I'm gonna come right out and say it," he said, pausing for dramatic effect, "Simon is going to sign us!"

He wrapped his arms around me, lifting me off the ground and spinning me around.

It was then I realized I couldn't do it. I couldn't ruin his future like this. I also wouldn't want my kid, or myself to live in the limelight. Also, it wasn't like we were dating or anything. It was, how he likes to call it, "a drunken mistake," or as I like to call it, "magical."

So when he returned me to the ground, I shoved the stick into my back pocket, saying "Th- That's great, Lou."
