My grandma's Red Roadmaster sped down the gravel road. i had agreed to housesit while they went on a cruise to somewhere in Mexico. "Are You Lonesome Tonight" played over the radio. "me and your grandpap danced to this at our prom" grandma said. Not taking her eyes off the road. "You had proms back then?" i joked. "i aint that old!" grandma laughed. i loved her laugh. it was the contagious laugh. It was the kind of one, once you hear. You cant help to laugh yourself.
The driveway appered up the road. Grandma turned and pulled up the long driveway. I saw my grandpa on the porch with a cigar in his mouth. he started to stand up but colapsed into his rocking chair. Grandma stoped and parked the car. I got out and helped my grandpa up. "Heres my boy!" he said enveloping me in a tight bear hug. He nougied me. Grandma popped open the trunk of her car and started unloading my bags. "you don-" i started before grandma intrupted. "youre the one doing the work. i need to help." she grumbled. no stopping her now. She plopped my largest suitcase next to me. and went back for my other two smaller bags. Grandpa looked at me. " you sure you want to do this?" grandpa said. "theres no 'wi-fi'" i could hear the quotation marks. " yes, i know. i like small towns and i havent been here in forever." i said. "no you havent." grandpa said. "last time i saw you. you where this tall!" he put his hand above his waist. i was about two feet taller than where his hand was.
Grandma put down the last of my bags at my feet. She joined grandpa infront of me. grandpa checked his watch."well. we better get going here soon. if we want good seats on the plain." grandpa said mostly to grandma. she nodded. " you can do whatever you want here bud. if you meet friends they can come over. just dont have sex on our bed. i just washed it." grandma joked. But she sounded serious. "i left a note for you on the fridge. its just a few things that need to be done. sorry." grandpa apologised.
A few quick chats and goodbyes they got into the car and waved. "we love you!" they said in unison. "I love you too!" i cupped my hands so they could hear me. my grandpas pickup kicked up dust and left. i caught my grandpa's license plate. "OUTTATIME". Classic grandpa. END OF CHAPTER ONE
