“Dinner is ready!” he yelled as he yanked open the door, his blue eyes dancing with excitement.
“Jeez, knock much?” I said sarcastically as I hopped off the bed.
“Oh, come on Lindsey. Quit whining, its your favorite! Hurry up!” he yelled. And just like that he was gone, rushing down the stairs.
“Alright, alright, I’m coming.” I muttered as I walked out of my room, shutting the door behind me. As I was walking down the stairs, I could hear the familiar sounds of dinner being prepared. Mom was cooking dinner in a huge pot on the stove. My brothers Caleb and Derrick were setting the table and Dad was watching baseball in the living room.
“Hey honey! Its your favorite!” Mom said smiling at me. “Wold you mind helping the boys set the table?
I smiled back. “Sure mom.” I grabbed a stack of napkins and started to distribute them. As soon as the table was set and the food was prepared, we all sat down to eat.
“So kids, tomorrows Monday. Did you all make your lunches?
“Yes.” Derrick, Caleb and I all replied.
“Did you check to make sure your homework is done?”
“Yes Mom, were all ready for school tomorrow.” replied Derrick. “Oh that reminds me, I've been looking at some colleges and I found some that I really like.” Derrick said like it was no big deal. We all stopped eating. Dad set down the newspaper and Mom looked at him in shock.
“Well, uh, don’t you think that its a little to early honey? I mean, college is so far away from now.”
“Come on mom. I'm a senior in high school and i've got to start thinking about my future.”
“Teresa, your sons right. He's not going to be in high school forever.”
“Oh, alright. Yes, Derrick, that's great that you want to start thinking about your future. And Caleb, Lindsey, you should be too.”
“What? I'm only a sophomore mom.” protested Caleb.
“Yeah, and I’m only in 8th Grade.” I agreed. “I want to start doing other things and live my life before I get stuck in college.” This is my chance. If I could, maybe, persuade them to let me go back to Sri-Lanka, then I could see him again!
“Like what, Lindsey?” asked my father.
“Uh, well, you know, i've always wanted to go back to Sri-Lanka sometime.” I replied shyly.
“What? You want to willingly go back to that place after..... after.....” Derrick's voice faltered.
“Young lady, I appreciate your... creativity in imagining what you want you want do in the future but I will not tolerate any of my children going back to that cursed place after what happened.” mom scolded. Now, everyone was glaring at me with anger and fear. I scooted back in my chair and stood up.
“Are you serious? I'm telling you what my dreams are and your shutting me down? Just – just because your afraid of something? Who does that?”
“Lindsey, that is no way to talk to your mother. She has a very reasonable point.” dad replied angrily.
“Ugh! This is so unfair!” I yelled. And with that, I marched up the stairs.
“Lindsey, get back here now young lady!” my dad shouted.
“Honey, we need to talk about this!” agreed my mom.
I finally reached my room and slammed the door shut.
