[ FOR NOW ]

[ cluby ]I watch her as she walks down the road and into my driveway. Oh God, no, no. I quickly run downstairs, planning to escape through the back door. Don't get me wrong here, I really like Ruby. No, like I really like her. No, not in a friend way. But, you see, we've been friends since, well, the beginning of time. Ok, not literally, but you get what I mean right? Like a long time. And you know. I've might've like seen a few movies where when they tell someone about how much they like them and then wreck their friendship and then disaster. And I'm freaking out! Should I tell her? Should I just not. But if I tell her she might not like me back. I'm mentally flapping now.
You know what? I have the worst timing ever. Because the moment I reach the bottom of the stairs my mum decides to open the door. Shoot. Ruby spots me trying to hide behind a wall but apparently, that doesn't work. She waves at me whilst giving me that beautiful smile. Oh God. I'm gonna die. How can she be so pretty? No beautiful. Breathe. She's just wearing her usual skinny jeans and a t-shirt. Same as always. But why have I suddenly noticed all these details like her eyes, her hair, her smile, her smell? Ok, maybe not exactly the same, she's started wear these flannel shirts that always smell really nice.
"Hey, I thought I'd pop over. Wanna go out or stay here?" She asks standing in the door way. My mum has returned to the living room so it was just us. And my sisters? Well, I don't want to know what they're doing.
"Let's go out. I'm just gonna go and change quickly." I run up stairs, shutting the door behind me so that Ruby doesn't come in.
I quickly change into jeans and pull on a hoodie. I go downstairs, subconsciously pulling down at the sleeves of my hoodie. When did I become so self-conscious? I give her a small, shy smile.
"Are you okay?" Ruby says frowning slightly. She must've noticed my awkwardness. Of course, she did! She's a freaking spy!
I just nod in reply trying to smile reassuringly. We walk to the dinner in an awkward silence. Suddenly, Ruby takes my hand in her soft warm ones. I turn to look at her in shock, my eyes wide. She just smiles innocently and looks away. I realise that walking a lot closer than we were before, our hands swingingly slightly in between us. We carry on walking in silence which is a lot less awkward. We sit opposite each other. Here's the tricky part, what do you say.
"So..." I trail off at the end but Ruby quickly picks up the conversation.
"So, what should we do afterwards?" She asks sipping on her banana milkshake. "I think we should go down to the library. It's way too cold to be outside and I don't fancy going home. What d'you think?"
"Um... Yeah sure," stupid Clancy. Of all the things I could've said!
"Clance, you okay?" She asks her eyebrows furrowed a slight frown appearing. Damn it, what do I say?
"Yeah, of course, I'm okay!" I say with obvious false enthusiasm.
"Clancy," she says standing up and sliding into my side of the booth. She sits next to me and leans on me, her head on my shoulder. "What's wrong?"
I look at her strangely, before giving in and wrapping my arm around her pulling her closer to me. She folds her legs underneath her and closes her eyes cuddling even closer to me. We stay like that for a bit. Just feeling her in my arms her head against my chest.
"We still gonna go to the library?" I whisper into her hair.
"Nah, I forgot my jumper and I don't think I can be bothered to walk that far." She mumbles, barely audible, her eyes still closed.
"Mine or yours?"
"Yours," she looks like she's about to fall asleep.
I pick Ruby up, making her squeal and carry her out the exit. I can't carry her for any longer so I put her back down onto her feet. We walk back to my house, my arm wrapped around her waist so that she's pressed against my side, trying to pass over some of my body heat. She shivers the whole way, her teeth chattering. I offer her my jumper but she declines, saying that I'll freeze. I ignore her protests and pull off the grey hoodie and pass it to her. She refuses again with a shake of her head.
"Fine, I'll just have to put it on for you!" She squeals when I put the jumper onto of her head. She reluctantly pulls on the jumper, pouting at me. She's right though it's freezing. It might even snow. When we reach my house we go up to my room and just lay on my bed.
I didn't have to do anything. Because she likes me back. Life is like a jelly donut with extra sugar sprinkled on top. Well, that's what it feels like for now anyways. For now.
