I hang up the phone and sigh. How could i let down my own girl on her big day? Not to mention the fact that this was all my idea. All i have ever wanted for her was for her dreams to come true.Lately all i have done was tear them apart.
I bend down to pick up the empty platters that i dropped while i was on the phone. I hear a high pitched whistle from the table of drunk guys behind me. I watched as they purposely threw peanut shells on the floor.
"Tsch! Assholes."I hear and see a pair of black shoes in front of me ." Need help?"
I raise my head up more and see my co-worker Rei Anno crouching down too.
"Thanks" I nod.
He stares at me for a minute then plucks what looks suspiciously like a pea out of my hair.
He stood up and held out his hand to help me, then he grabbed the plates. As we walked back into the kitchen he touched my arm.
"Are you ok?" He asked.
i looked down and then put the bowl i was holding in the sink.
"My daughter has an audition that i promised to be to but i can't make it. Mrs. Hieu told me to stay later today. This was the day her passion could come right out of her and i said i would be right there in the front seat watching. " i started to tear up. "I know she worked so hard for today and now i can't see the out come of it. I always put my work first . Am I-" My voice broke " am i a bad mother for doing that?"
I looked down again to hide my face from his view. All i heard was the people all around us working and the customers outside of the kitchen door clanking silverware and talking until suddenly i heard a small chuckle. I looked up and saw Rei laughing.
"Hey?! What are you laughing at? This is serious?" I yelled.
He kept on laughing shaking with amusement.
"Please explain your sudden humor."I said with my hands on my hips.
"I don't get you." He said finally.
"Come again?"
"Why didn't you say something. Go!" He answered.
"What?"
"Dude go I'll cover for you."He repeated.
"Serious?"I asked again.
"Go ahead."
'Oh,my goodness! Rei you are a life saver'. I thought to myself. I look at him and smile my appreciation then I turn around take off my apron and run out the doors.
"Be careful!"
I hear behind me.But i was way too far away outside to respond.
I made a couple of stops before i cut onto the high way. First i realized that my baby could be on her first step at becoming a singer so i grabbed her a fluffy pink teddy bear. Then i thought she may be upset for me coming in late, so i bought her a card. I have the whole day set up. I mean it is only 10:30 am. We love the view of the lake from the tallest tower at the park so naturally we'd get ice-cream and go there. Maybe we can go to the amusement park. Oh man i haven't been to one of those in forever . You know what ? Maybe just a relaxing day at the movie theater is a good idea. So many thoughts. 'I'll just call her and ask what she wants to do' I think to myself and U-turn onto the other side of the high way. I had already picked up a cake from the bakery and dropped it home. So I pull out my phone and type in her phone number .
"01-0188-0141" I recite to the phone and it calls for me. I hear a click.
"Hello?" I hear her say.
"Hey baby it's me . I just wanted to let you know that-"
" Unfortunately i can't come to the phone right now .Out here chasin' dreams . You know how it is. I'm sure your call is important but i'll have to get to you later. Thanks for calling! And when you hear a beep you know what to do. BEEEEEEEEPPP!!"
I guess i'll leave a voice mail. That girl really needs to change that message .
"Hey. It's me. I'm on my way to you. I got someone to cover for me at work but i may still get in trouble tomorrow. What do you want to do after auditions? I was thinking maybe-"
I heard tires screeching up ahead and glanced up at the truck in front of me. Too late.
