I heard silence on the other end, then a few short words and more silence. "Put him on the phone," Phil said. I handed the phone to Dan, but he didn't move.
"Phil, can I put you on speaker?" I asked.
"Yes."
I tapped the speaker button and set the phone down in front of Dan, who never even looked up from his own phone. I saw a few texts from his agent on the screen, and carefully picked up his phone, which he lunged for, before he froze at the sound of Phil's voice.
"Dan?" Phil said. Dan took a deep breath and stared at the phone in front of him.
"Yeah?" he replied, voice breaking.
"Where are you?" Phil asked calmly.
"Um... Y/N's apartment."
"What room?" Phil specified. Dan took a deep breath before replying.
"Living room."
"What's in the room?"
"Phil I can't do this right now..." Dan shook his head and covered his face with his hands. Phil's got this, Y/N, I told myself. It'll be okay.
"What's in the room, Dan?" Phil persisted.
"There's a couch... An entertainment stand..."
"Is someone there with you?"
"Yeah."
"Who?"
"Y/N," Dan responded, voice still weak.
"What does she look like? Can you tell me?" Phil inquired. How is this helping?!
"She uh... She has (h/c) hair and (e/c) eyes, and she's wearing a sweatshirt/t-shirt and... Anything else?"
"Look at her face, what emotion do you think she's feeling?" Phil asked. Dan looked me in the eye and I held his gaze, my heart breaking at the sight of the tear stains on his face.
"Worry," Dan responded. "She's worried. About me..." I nodded in agreement.
"Alright. Can you take some deep breaths for me?" Phil instructed. Dan nodded, even though Phil couldn't see him, and took a few breaths, steadying himself. "What happened?" Phil finally asked.
"Nothing," Dan lied.
"Dan, I don't care what it is, I need to know," Phil said.
"It's not something I want you to know about."
"I need to know."
Dan took another deep breath and ran his hands through his hair before covering his face again. I figured this was probably a good time for me to leave the room, but I still wanted to hear what happened and make sure Dan was okay, so I walked into the kitchen, shut the door, and slid down to sit against it. I could still hear Phil talking to Dan, so I stayed there.
"It's about YouTube," Dan said.
"What about it?" Phil asked. "I can't wait for you to come back so we can do another gaming video!"
"I don't know if I can do that," Dan admitted. "Maybe it would be better if you did some of those on your own."
"What are you talking about? It's called Dan and Phil games, not Phil games. That wouldn't make much sense..."
"They don't like me Phil!" Dan suddenly yelled. "The fans don't like me, they never have, can't you see that?" Silence. There was silence on Phil's end of the phone for a long time.
"That can't be true, Dan," Phil said meekly.
"Oh can't it? Ask our agents. Ask anyone. Why do you think you've been having so many solo meet-and-greets lately?" Dan asked. "I'm dragging you down, I don't deserve to be on your channel."
"Don't say that! Come on, we're Dan and Phil! Alone we're just... Dan... And Phil. That's not nearly as good."
"They hate me. You should, too."
"I don't hate you, Dan. You know that."
"Yeah but-"
"I love you."
I gasped, louder than I should have. Did Phil mean that as in best friends? Or... Something else? If it was something else... How had they kept it a secret for so long?
"I love you too, Phil."
"You know I'd never leave you for fans, right?"
"But it'd be so much better for you if you did."
"I don't care about that! I care about you. And I care that we're doing this together. If you quit, I quit. It's together or not at all."
"You mean that?"
"I'd die if I didn't."
I heard a beep that meant the phone was now off of speaker mode. I took a deep breath to calm myself - the fangirl in me was dying. Dan and Phil? If the fans found out, they'd freak. So I had to keep calm.
I jumped at the sound of footsteps and stood up to busy myself getting some cereal, the only food I had left in my apartment. Dan swung the door open and half smiled at me, phone in hand.
"Thanks," he said quietly.
"Of course," I replied, taking my phone back. "Are you okay?"
"Better," he shrugged. "Are you? You look like you've seen a ghost."
"Yeah, about that..." I sighed. "I um... I heard your conversation."
"Okay?" he said, as if that weren't important. Then his eyes widened. "No, wait, Y/N... That's not..."
"Are you and Phil-?"
"No! Nonono. We just say that," he explained. "He's like my older brother, so I treat him like family. Geez, I'm sorry, I didn't even think about it!"
"Oh, okay! Not that it would be bad, I just - I didn't know, is all, I just-" I stuttered, but Dan held up a hand to stop me.
"You're fine, I get it!" he laughed. "You have no idea how many people think that!"
"Alright," I giggled. I ran forward to hug him. "I'm so glad you're okay. You scared me there," I confessed. He hugged me back.
"Thank you," he said again. I smiled. He's okay, and I'm moving to London.
